Joe McCarthy: The Rising Star of Irish Rugby and His Love for the Maul
Ireland’s recent Six Nations victory over England at Twickenham showcased the impressive talent of flanker Joe McCarthy, who made a significant impact early in the game with a crucial turnover. The 22-year-old’s physicality and unique enthusiasm for the maul have quickly made him a key player for both Ireland and his club.
Early Impact at Twickenham
In the sixth minute of the match against England, McCarthy demonstrated his skill and aggression by disrupting an English maul. Following a lineout throw from Luke Cowan-Dickie to Maro Itoje, McCarthy “muscled through the forwards in white, wrapped his hands around the ball and ripped it off the English hooker,” leading to an early penalty for Ireland, converted by Jack Crowley. This turnover set the tone for Ireland’s dominant performance.
A Passion for the Maul
McCarthy revealed a surprising passion for the often-overlooked aspect of rugby – the maul. “I bloody love mauls to be honest, they’re probably my favourite part of the game,” he stated. He attributes this fondness to rigorous maul training during his time at Blackrock College, led by Séamus Toomey. “I think maybe even my Blackrock days, Séamus Toomey had us doing crazy-hard maul sessions and I think that’s ingrained that into me. So I love that area.”
Building Momentum and Team Spirit
The early turnover not only contributed to the score but also boosted McCarthy’s confidence and energy throughout the game. “Yeah, it was nice when you get an early turnover at the start of the game because it gets you into it and I felt sharp and felt like I had good energy in the game.” He also highlighted the importance of team belief and the support from Irish fans, describing the atmosphere as feeling “like a home game for a bit of that.”
Family Support
McCarthy shared the joy of the victory with his family, who were in attendance at Twickenham. While his brother Paddy was still recovering from injury, his brother Andrew and their parents were there to celebrate. “It’s super special seeing your family after a game; it’s so good how much joy it brings them. I love seeing them there.”
Looking Ahead
Joe McCarthy’s performance against England solidified his position as a rising star in Irish rugby. His unique skillset, combined with his passion for the game and strong family support, suggests a promising future for the young flanker as Ireland prepares for upcoming matches against Wales and Scotland in the Six Nations. He was also named to the 2025 British & Irish Lions squad, set to tour Australia.
