Rangers Secure Veleno on $1.2 Million Deal
Joe Veleno has signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the New York Rangers, marking his move to a fourth NHL franchise. Veleno enters the New York lineup as a fourth-line center and penalty-killing specialist after spending the previous season with the Montreal Canadiens.
A Path Through the Original Six
The agreement follows Veleno’s stint as an unrestricted free agent. He hit the open market after the Canadiens declined to issue a qualifying offer. His career trajectory now includes stints with four Original Six franchises.
Originally selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Veleno was traded from the Red Wings to the Chicago Blackhawks at the 2025 trade deadline. He later joined the Montreal Canadiens, where he played 61 regular-season games, recording two goals and three assists, followed by one assist in nine postseason appearances.
Defining a Defensive Identity
Veleno expects to fill a specific tactical role for the Rangers. He noted that discussions with the club’s management centered on his utility as a fourth-line center and his contributions to the penalty-kill unit.
“I’ve adapted my game,” Veleno said of his transition into a defensive-forward role. “I found a role that suits me and that I’ve taken pride in filling. It’s an element I had to improve to stay in the NHL.”
Striving for Consistency in New York
Across 367 career NHL games, Veleno has accumulated 40 goals and 86 total points. While he expressed a desire to increase his offensive production, he emphasized that his immediate focus remains on maintaining the defensive identity that has secured his place in the league.
| Team | Status |

| Detroit Red Wings | Drafted (2018) |
| Chicago Blackhawks | Traded (2025) |
| Montreal Canadiens | Free Agent Signing |
| New York Rangers | Current Signing |
Reflecting on his time in Montreal, Veleno expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in his home market. “Everything I experienced with the Canadiens, I really thank them for giving me a chance and trusting me on the ice,” he stated. As he joins the Rangers, he looks to build on the defensive consistency he established during his tenure in Quebec.
