Embiid Involved in Altercation With Philadelphia Inquirer Columnist
PHILADELPHIA – Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers superstar, was embroiled in an altercation with Marcus Hayes, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, following the 76ers’ 124-107 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.
Embiid confronted Hayes in the locker room after the game, expressing his anger towards a recent column that referenced his deceased brother, Arthur, and son, who also shares his name, while criticizing Embiid’s professionalism and fitness.
Heated Exchange Sparks Physical Confrontation
“The next time you bring up my dead brother and my son again, you’re going to see what I’m going to do to you and I’m going to have to… live with the consequences,” Embiid threatened Hayes. Embiid’s statement, punctuated with profanity, drew sharp condemnation for its severity and personal nature.
Hayes apologized, but Embiid rejected the apology, stating, “That’s not the f—ing first time.” Tensions escalated, culminating in Embiid physically pushing Hayes in the shoulder. Team staff intervened, separating the players and moving reporters to elsewhere in an attempt to quell the situation.
Team security subsequently asked reporters to refrain from reporting on the incident. Embiid defied this instruction, declaring, “They can do whatever they want. I don’t give a s—.”
Following the altercation, Daryl Morey, President of Basketball Operations for the 76ers, confirmed knowledge of the incident, assuring fans and media that an investigation would be conducted with the NBA.
