Joffrey Ballet’s ‘American Icons’ Celebrates 70 Years of Dance Excellence
The Joffrey Ballet is currently captivating audiences with its production of “American Icons” at the Civic Opera House in Chicago, a performance that honors the company’s 70th anniversary and the influential choreographers who shaped contemporary dance. The production, running until March 1, 2026, features four distinct ballets representing different eras, and styles.
A Journey Through 20th-Century Choreography
The performance opens with Gerald Arpino’s “Kettentanz,” originally premiered in 1971. This ethereal piece, set to the music of Johann Strauss Sr., evokes the atmosphere of classic Vienna balls with a striking tree backdrop representing the Vienna Woods.
Next, audiences experience Martha Graham’s groundbreaking “Secular Games,” which debuted in 1962. This modern dance work, performed barefoot and in leotards, showcases the capabilities of the human body and explores themes of human ambition and competition.
Robert Joffrey’s “Postcards,” a tribute to Paris in the 1900s, follows. This piece uniquely blends ballet with opera, featuring mezzo-soprano Camille Robles alongside a pas de deux.
The performance concludes with “Voluntaries,” a challenging and celebratory ballet choreographed as a tribute to the late John Cranko. Dancers perform in white costumes against a backdrop of a changing orb, accompanied by music played on the Lyric’s organ, creating a powerful affirmation of life.
A Resounding Success
The production has been met with enthusiastic reception, with many audience members visibly moved by the performances. Two of the ballets, “Secular Games” and “Postcards,” had their Joffrey debut on February 19, 2026. The entire production runs for two hours, including two intermissions.
The audience included many aspiring ballerinas, suggesting the performance’s inspiring effect on the next generation of dancers. The combination of exceptional choreography and the Lyric’s orchestra has created a truly memorable experience.
