Manzambi Sidelined for Quarter-Final Clash
Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi will miss Saturday’s FIFA U-17 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina in Kansas City. Head coach Murat Yakin confirmed on Friday that the Geneva-born player remains sidelined by a lingering left knee injury, despite an intensive rehabilitation effort.
A Failed Race Against Time
Manzambi sustained the injury during a Monday training session, immediately following preparations for the Round of 16 match against Colombia. Although the team held out hope following their penalty shootout victory, medical staff ultimately ruled him out of the upcoming fixture.
“Unfortunately, Johan will not be able to play tomorrow,” Murat Yakin stated during the official pre-match press conference. “We tried everything to get him back in time, but it will not be possible.”
Recalibrating the Swiss Attack
Switzerland has managed only one goal in regulation time throughout the tournament—a Breel Embolo penalty against Qatar.
Tactical indicators point toward Fabian Rieder retaining his role supporting Embolo, a partnership that showed promise during the second half against Colombia. Meanwhile, the staff is monitoring Ruben Vargas, who also sustained an injury during Monday’s training. While Vargas was limited to a 90th-minute substitute appearance in the previous round, coaches are hopeful he will be fit to start against Argentina.
Defensive Concerns and Midfield Reinforcements
The squad faces further personnel hurdles at Arrowhead Stadium. Defender Luca Jaquez is expected to remain on the bench due to a persistent muscular issue dating back to his start against Canada; he was excluded from final team training on Friday.
However, the midfield receives a crucial boost with the return of Fribourg native Michel Aebischer. His availability provides Yakin with a necessary tactical option as Switzerland hunts for a semi-final berth.
