John Lithgow Nearly Departed HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Amid J.K. Rowling Controversy
John Lithgow, set to portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series, seriously considered withdrawing from the project due to the controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues. Lithgow ultimately decided to remain involved, believing the story itself promotes inclusivity.
Initial Concerns and Soul-Searching
The actor revealed to The New York Times that he was “stung” by the criticism he received for accepting the role, particularly given Rowling’s publicly stated positions. He acknowledged that taking on the part of Dumbledore, which he described as “probably the last major role” of his career, meant accepting that the issue would be a recurring topic in interviews for years to arrive. Lithgow also shared that a friend with a transgender daughter urged him to reconsider his involvement.
Why He Stayed
Despite his initial discomfort, Lithgow concluded that the core message of the “Harry Potter” series aligns with his own values. He stated the story is “clearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance, and bigotry.” He emphasized that he has never met J.K. Rowling and does not agree with her views on transgender issues. He also noted there is “no trace of transphobic sensibility” in the adaptation.
HBO’s Perspective
Casey Bloys, HBO’s chief content officer, addressed the controversy in May, stating that Rowling’s personal views are separate from the content of the series. Bloys affirmed that the series is not being influenced by Rowling’s opinions and encouraged those who disagree with her to engage with her directly on social media (Yahoo Entertainment).
Broader Industry Response
Lithgow is not the only figure associated with the “Harry Potter” franchise to publicly address Rowling’s views. Actors like Pedro Pascal, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson have all expressed their disagreement with Rowling’s stance on transgender rights. Keira Knightley also acknowledged the controversy surrounding Rowling’s views (LGBTQ Nation).
Series Details
The HBO “Harry Potter” series is planned as a seven-season adaptation of the books, with a premiere date anticipated in 2027. Rowling will serve as an executive producer (Geek Tyrant).
