The John McGinnis Case: Understanding the 2020 Kidnapping and Assault on the Colville Indian Reservation On June 1, 2020, a series of violent crimes unfolded on the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington state that would ultimately result in a 22-year federal prison sentence for John Edward McGinnis. Court documents detail how McGinnis kidnapped four people at gunpoint, held them for several hours, and sexually assaulted one of the victims. According to the charging documents, McGinnis began his criminal spree by entering a home on the reservation where he held three victims—ages 9, 13, and 17—at gunpoint inside their residence. After forcing these victims into a truck he later stole, McGinnis drove them to his trailer, which he then set on fire, destroying the property. During the ordeal, three of the initial victims managed to escape. Undeterred, McGinnis proceeded to the Grand Coulee area where he encountered a fourth victim. Court records state he robbed this woman at gunpoint, forced her into the stolen truck, and sexually assaulted her while threatening to kill her if she attempted to escape. This fourth victim eventually escaped at a gas station in Spokane by convincing McGinnis she was going inside to pay for fuel. McGinnis was apprehended and subsequently charged with multiple federal offenses including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon on tribal land, arson on tribal land, felon in possession of ammunition and a firearm, and discharging and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. On May 21, 2021, he pleaded guilty to all charges. In federal court in Spokane, John Edward McGinnis received a sentence of 22 years in prison for his crimes committed during the June 2020 incident on the Colville Indian Reservation. The case highlights the serious consequences for violent crimes committed on tribal lands under federal jurisdiction.
