O’Shea Focused on ‘Cup Final’ Play-off as Contract Talks Loom

PRAGUE – Republic of Ireland assistant manager John O’Shea has stated his desire to extend his contract with the national team, but is fully focused on Thursday’s crucial World Cup play-off semi-final against Czechia. The match, described by O’Shea as a “cup final,” takes place in Prague at 7pm local time and will be broadcast on RTÉ2, RTÉ Player, and RTÉ Radio 1. RTÉ Sport reports that O’Shea anticipates contract discussions will be “straightforward” once the play-off window concludes.

Full Focus on Czechia Clash

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, O’Shea emphasized the team’s complete concentration on the upcoming match. “It’s that case of full focus when you reach into camp like this. It’s full focus on the game ahead,” he said. “All the energy is going into that and then hopefully it will be straightforward then afterwards in terms of (a latest contract).”

Momentum from November

O’Shea believes the squad can build on the positive momentum gained from their victories over Portugal and Hungary in November, which secured their place in the play-offs. BBC Sport reports O’Shea stating the importance of reinforcing that momentum in training and video sessions, reminding players of their success in Hungary while preparing for the challenge in Prague.

‘Quiet Confidence’ in the Squad

The former Manchester United defender highlighted a sense of “quiet confidence” within the team. “The boys are in a good place. Training today, it almost reminded me of that cup final scenario,” O’Shea commented. He also noted the high intensity and positive atmosphere among the players, with everyone eager to compete for a starting position.

New Faces in Contention

O’Shea confirmed that both Stoke City’s Bosun Lawal and QPR’s Harvey Vale are in contention for a place in the starting eleven. He praised Vale’s quality and noted that head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has been impressed with his progress, even visiting him personally. Lawal’s quality was also highlighted, having previously worked with him at the under-21 level.

Play-off Final Awaits

A victory in Prague would set up a play-off final for the Republic of Ireland against either Denmark or North Macedonia on March 31st. The42.ie adds to the reports of a positive atmosphere within the Irish camp as they prepare for this pivotal match.
