Jay Johnston, the voice behind Bob’s Burgers’ iconic antagonist Jimmy Pesto Sr., has been sentenced to prison for his role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
A federal judge handed down a 12-month and one-day sentence to Johnston, 55, on charges related to obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder. His plea comes after admitting guilt last July to the felony charge. Along with prison, Johnston’s sentence includes two years of supervised release and $2,000 in restitution.
Johnston’s Actions on January 6
Court documents detail Johnston’s involvement in the Capitol breach. According to prosecutors, he wielded a stolen U.S. Capitol Police riot shield and actively participated in efforts to push against police lines. After the events, Johnston sent a message to an acquaintance stating, “The news has presented it as an attack. It actually wasn’t. Thought it kind of turned into that. It was a mess. Got maced and tear gassed and I found it quite untastic.”
Prosecutors argued for an 18-month sentence, citing Johnston’s attempt to minimize his participation by dressing as Jacob Chansley, the “QAnon Shaman,” at a Halloween party.
A photo released by the U.S. District Court depicts Johnston in full Chansley attire.
Impact on Bob’s Burgers and Beyond
Following the January 6th events, Johnston was removed from the cast of Bob’s Burgers in December 2021. The decision was reportedly made by the show’s top staff.
Johnston’s voice acting credits extend beyond Bob’s Burgers. He has lent his voice to popular shows like Rick and Morty, Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole, and Moral Orel, the latter of which he also directed and produced. His on-screen credits include notable roles in Better Call Saul, Arrested Development, The Sarah Silverman Program, and Mr. Show with Bob and David.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of participating in acts of violence and civil unrest.
