Jonas Vingegaard Dominates Paris-Nice Stage 5, Extends Overall Lead
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) secured his second consecutive stage win at Paris-Nice on Thursday, launching a decisive solo attack on stage five and significantly extending his lead in the general classification. The 29-year-old Dane rode the final 21 kilometers alone to victory in Colombier-le-Vieux, southeast France.
Vingegaard’s Commanding Performance
Vingegaard attacked on the Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Muzols climb during the 206-kilometer stage, leaving his rivals unable to respond. He had taken the yellow jersey on Wednesday after a challenging stage in brutal weather conditions at Uchon, and capitalized on the improved conditions on Thursday to further solidify his position.
Stage Results and Overall Standings
Valentin Paret-Peintre finished second, trailing Vingegaard by 2 minutes and 2 seconds. The remaining contenders arrived approximately 18 seconds later, unable to mount an effective chase.
Following his stage win, Vingegaard now leads the overall standings by 3 minutes and 22 seconds over Colombian rider Daniel Martínez.
Looking Ahead
Vingegaard is using the Paris-Nice race as part of his preparation for a demanding season, which includes ambitious goals at both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France. The eight-day race continues on Friday with a 179.3km hilly stage from Barentane near Avignon to Apt in southern France, offering potential opportunities for further attacks before the decisive mountain stages.
