Jordi Alba Makes Surprise Return to the Field with Soccer Aid After Retirement
Just months after announcing his retirement following Inter Miami’s MLS Cup triumph, Spanish football legend Jordi Alba is set to return to the pitch for a special cause. The former Barcelona and Spain left-back will participate in Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2026, scheduled for May 31 at the London Stadium, home of West Ham United.
A Charity Match with a Legacy
Soccer Aid for UNICEF is a high-profile charity event that brings together celebrities and retired professional footballers. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event, which began in 2006 and has become an annual fixture since 2018. The late Diego Maradona participated in the inaugural event.
Alba Joins the World XI Squad
Alba will be part of the World XI team, which will face an England XI comprised of celebrities and former England internationals. Confirmed players alongside Alba include Edwin van der Sar, Leonardo Bonucci, Jen Beattie and Ali Krieger. Previous participants in the World XI have included Nemanja Vidić, Rivaldo, David Trezeguet, Carlos Tevez, and Kaylyn Kyle.
England Lineup Features Football and Entertainment Stars
The England team will be led by former captain Wayne Rooney, with fellow England veterans Joe Hart, Jermain Defoe, and Theo Walcott also set to feature. Former Lionesses Jill Scott, Toni Duggan, and Steph Houghton will also participate, alongside actor Tom Hiddleston.
A Distinguished Career
Jordi Alba enjoyed a highly decorated career, most notably with Barcelona, where he made 459 appearances over 11 years, winning 17 trophies, including five La Liga titles and one UEFA Champions League. He also represented Spain 93 times, winning the UEFA European Championship in 2012 and the UEFA Nations League in 2023.
A ‘Last Dance’ in Miami
Alba reunited with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami, helping the club secure their first Major League Soccer championship in 2023. Both Alba and Busquets announced their intention to retire at the end of the 2025 season. His time with Inter Miami was described as a “Last Dance” for both players.
Barcelona’s Defensive Concerns
Interestingly, Alba’s potential availability has sparked discussion about Barcelona’s current defensive situation. Recent injuries to Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde have left the team vulnerable at fullback, prompting some to wonder if a return for the veteran could be beneficial. However, Alba is committed to his retirement and will be focusing on his appearance in Soccer Aid for UNICEF.
Alba will turn 37 this month.
