Safdie Brothers’ Abandoned “Marty Supreme” Ending Involved a Vampire Bite

The Safdie brothers, known for their gritty and unpredictable films like “Uncut gems” and “Good Time,” originally envisioned a far more bizarre ending for their 2024 film, “Marty Supreme.” According to a recent discussion on the The Filmcast podcast, the initial plan involved a vampire biting the protagonist, Marty, during a 1980s concert scene.

During the podcast, Josh Safdie revealed that the ending featured Mr. Splendid (Kevin O’Leary) approaching Marty and his granddaughter at a concert and biting marty on the neck.”you’re on his eyes, we built the prosthetic for Timmy and everything, and Mr. Wonderful shows up behind him and takes a bite out of his neck, and that was the last thing in the movie,” Safdie explained.

Homage to 1980s Vampire Films?

The unexpected twist draws parallels to 1980s vampire films like Tony Scott’s “the Hunger” and Joel Schumacher’s “The Lost Boys”, both of which prominently featured vampires in concert or club settings. “The Lost Boys,” in particular, featured a vampire running a video store and pursuing the mother of the main character.

Safdie’s interest in incorporating elements of the 1980s into “Marty Supreme,” despite its 1950s setting – including the film’s soundtrack – suggests the vampire cameo wouldn’t have been entirely out of place, even if unconventional.
