Hawthorn’s Josh Weddle Signs Contract Extension, Rejecting Essendon’s Offer

Hawthorn young gun Josh Weddle has committed his future to the club, signing a four-year contract extension that will keep him with the Hawks until at least the end of 2030. The decision comes after Weddle rejected a substantial seven-year offer from Essendon, reportedly worth $10 million.

A Close Call for Essendon

According to reports, Essendon came closest to securing Weddle through a symbolic gesture – a vintage 1905 Essendon guernsey with a red sash displayed in the Hawthorn museum. Despite the allure, Weddle ultimately chose to remain with the Hawks. “Ultimately it came down to where I wanted to play my footy and I feel like I play my best footy at Hawthorn,” Weddle stated at a media conference on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Contract Details and Future Aspirations

Weddle’s latest contract extends through his free agency period. Hawthorn’s resurgence in recent seasons, coupled with Weddle’s pivotal role in their return to finals contention, has fueled ambitions for a premiership by 2030. The 21-year-old has played 60 games since being drafted in 2022.

Essendon’s Pursuit and Hawthorn’s Stance

Essendon’s aggressive pursuit of Weddle followed their unsuccessful attempt to acquire Hawthorn captain Zach Merrett during the previous Trade Period. The Bombers’ offer to Weddle was a significant one, but Hawthorn remained firm in their desire to retain their rising star. Teammates Jack Ginnivan and Nick Watson prematurely hinted at the re-signing, leading to some lighthearted ribbing of Weddle.

Expanding Role for Weddle

Weddle’s versatility is a key asset for Hawthorn. While known for his defensive prowess, he has demonstrated the ability to play on the wing, in the ruck, and even as a forward. With Will Day sidelined due to a shoulder injury, Weddle is expected to observe increased playing time in the midfield, building on his pre-season hitout against Geelong where he spent considerable time in the middle.

Weddle acknowledged some awkwardness during negotiations, particularly while on holiday with teammates when news of Essendon’s offer surfaced. He also credited the club psychologist for support during the process. Despite the attention, Weddle remained focused on his commitment to Hawthorn and its future success.

“I didn’t really look into moving… where the club is heading, I’m really looking forward to it,” Weddle added.
