Joyce Fasig, Longtime Community Pillar, Remembered with Affection
Joyce Ellen Fasig, a beloved figure known for her vibrant spirit and dedication to community, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 8, 2026, at the age of 83. Born Joyce Ellen Young on June 22, 1942, in Lebanon, Indiana, her life journey took her from the heartland of Illinois to international experiences and a cherished return to her roots.
Early Life and Love Story
Shortly after her birth, Joyce’s family moved to Martinsville, Illinois, where she spent her formative years. It was in high school that she met John Fasig, the captain of the football team, while she was a cheerleader. Their connection blossomed into a 63-year partnership, beginning with their marriage in 1960, just before Joyce’s 18th birthday.
A Life Built Together
The couple began their life together in Sandwich, Illinois, where John worked for Caterpillar. There, they welcomed their three children – Julie, Janice, and John – establishing a home filled with love and energy. A transfer with Caterpillar led the family to Davenport, Iowa, and eventually to Eldridge, Iowa, before an opportunity arose for John to work at the Caterpillar facility in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 1982.
Embracing Global Experiences
Joyce embraced their time overseas, becoming an active member of the American Club in Jakarta and forging lasting friendships. She was known for her hospitality, hosting gatherings and welcoming both friends and visitors. Following Jakarta, the family lived in Bangalore, India, for two years before returning to the United States when John’s career took him to Peoria, Illinois.
Returning to Roots and Winter Retreats
After John’s retirement, Joyce and John built a home in Martinsville, Illinois, creating a central gathering place for family and friends. They later purchased a winter home at Green Gate Grove in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, where Joyce became a beloved figure, serving as the director of activities and earning the affectionate title of “queen” of the swimming pool and hot tub. They were even honored as King and Queen of the park, participating in the local parade.
Later Years and Legacy
As their health declined, Joyce and John moved to Rice Lake, Wisconsin, in 2022, to be closer to their grandchildren, residing at Woodstone Senior Living. Joyce was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren: Jeremiah Costello, Jason Kennedy, Kyle Costello, Cameron Costello, Austin Millican, Jessica Letner, and June Fasig, and a great-grandmother to sixteen great-grandchildren.
A Life Filled with Joy
Joyce found joy in simple pleasures – Elvis music, margaritas, and time spent near the water. She enjoyed fishing, swimming, cheering on her favorite basketball teams, and embarking on road trips. Her outgoing personality and talent for hosting made her the heart of every gathering, fostering friendships throughout her life.
A celebration of Joyce’s life was held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Woodstone Senior Living in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. She will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her dedication to bringing people together, and the countless friendships she nurtured.
