Juris Vaivods: A Renaissance Man of Latvian Music and Theatre
This March marks a significant year for Juris Vaivods, not only as he approaches his 60th birthday on March 29th, but also as a testament to his prolific career as a composer, conductor, and the head of the musical department at the Dailes Theatre. Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born in Vanagi, Preiļi County (now Vārkavas novada) in 1966, Vaivods’s musical journey began in Latgale. He received his initial musical education at the Līvāni Music School, specializing in accordion from 1976 to 1981. He continued his studies at the Daugavpils Music High School as a choral conductor from 1981 to 1985, where he founded the Daugavpils Country Chapel, played in the “Daugava” brass orchestra, and sang in the “Daugava” and “Latgale” choirs. Academic Pursuits and Choral Leadership
Vaivods further honed his skills at the Latvian Academy of Music (LMA), studying choral conducting under Edgar Račevskis (1985–1992) and Imants Kokars (1992–1994), earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He also pursued composition studies with Pauls Dambis and Pēteris Plakitis. He supplemented his education with internships at the J.S.
