Daile Theater Reimagines Shakespeare with "Dream of Summer Night"
The Daile Theater, Latvia’s esteemed national theater, is set to captivate audiences with a fresh and contemporary take on William Shakespeare’s timeless comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Under the direction of theater artistic director Viesturs Kairiš, this production promises a vibrant reimagining of the classic tale, weaving together historical and mythological elements with deeply relevant themes for today’s world.
Known for his innovative approaches, Kairiš has assembled a talented creative team, including composer Jacob Yanchevsky, stage designer Kristaps Kramins, costume designer Baiba Litiņa, choreographer Anna Abalihina, light artist Reinis Zalte, and video artist Viktorija Martjanova. This ensemble promises a visually stunning and immersive theatrical experience.
The director’s vision for the play delves into the profound and playful duality of Shakespeare’s work. "It is the funniest comedy about the end of the world and simultaneously occurring is the invisible world that occasionally brings us as a volcano," Kairiš states, highlighting the production’s ability to balance humor with deeper existential questions.
Agnese Vārpiņa, the theater’s spokeswoman, emphasizes the enduring appeal of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, stating: "It is one of the most common Shakespeare comedies with a wide range of interpretations at the Daile Theater. The big bard in this comedy has made it clear that human nature does not obey man, while being elect and truly, madly in love can also turn out to be a bad joke."
This retelling features a talented cast, including Gints Grāvelis, Marta Lovisa Yanchevska, Lauris Subatnieks, and Madara Viļčuka, among others, who will bring Shakespeare’s iconic characters to life with fresh energy and nuance.
The premiere of Dream of Summer Night has already taken place, and audiences are eager to embark on this memorable theatrical journey.
