George Diaco Receives Threats During Hockey Allsvenskan Playoff Series

Kalmar Hockey player George Diaco has been the target of threats during the ongoing quarter-final series against Södertälje, prompting action from the club, the HockeyAllsvenskan league, and the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. The incidents have escalated tensions in the series, leading to increased security measures.

Escalating Tensions and Threats

The situation arose following Diaco’s goal celebration directed towards Södertälje fans after a game in the series. This act ignited strong reactions from the opposing team’s supporters, culminating in a banner displayed during a subsequent match with the message “Fuck you Diaco.” However, the animosity extended beyond the arena.

According to reports from Expressen and Hockeysverige.se, Diaco has received specific threats, and other Kalmar players have been subjected to anonymous phone calls. These threats prompted Kalmar to report the incident to the police.

League and Association Response

Erik Ryman, Sportchef at HockeyAllsvenskan, condemned the threats as “completely unacceptable.” He emphasized the league’s zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior, stating, “It is something we absolutely do not want against players, leaders or referees. It is completely unacceptable.” Ryman also expressed concern for the players’ families, noting that the threats had extended to them as well.

The league has forwarded the information to the security department of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, which is collaborating with the clubs to investigate the threats. However, Ryman acknowledged the difficulty in identifying the individuals responsible.

Increased Security Measures

Following the threats, Kalmar’s team bus required a police escort after a game in Södertälje due to disturbances. The incidents highlight the demand for enhanced security measures to protect players and staff during the playoff series.

Player Reaction

Wilhelm Westlund of Kalmar expressed his dismay at the situation, stating, “Threats and such are not something we want in society at all. But then there must be feelings. They stick to their team and we play for another team, but I think you can keep it to a good level.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association and Kalmar Hockey are continuing to investigate the threats and work with authorities to ensure the safety of all involved. The league has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for players, officials, and fans.
