Patrick Kane Sets New NHL Scoring Record for U.S.-Born Players
Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane has made history, becoming the all-time leading scorer among American-born players in the National Hockey League. Kane reached the milestone of 1,375 career points on Thursday, January 30, 2026, with an assist during a 4-3 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals.
The record-breaking point came at 9:52 of the second period, assisting on a goal by Ben Chiarot that tied the game 1-1. Kane demonstrated his signature playmaking ability,skating the puck into the left corner before a skillful pass to Alex DeBrincat,who then set up Chiarot for the score.
Kane had previously tied the record with an assist on a goal by DeBrincat on Tuesday, January 28, 2026, in a game against the Los Angeles Kings.
The 37-year-old surpassed the previous record held by Mike Modano, who amassed 1,374 points over his 20-year career. Modano held the record since November 7, 2007, after surpassing phil Housley. Modano concluded his NHL journey with the Red Wings in the 2010-11 season.
in 1,342 regular-season games across 19 NHL seasons, Kane has accumulated 500 goals and 875 assists. Despite achieving this historic feat, Kane remains focused on the game itself.”I never really thought about any American scoring records or being a top American player of all time,” Kane recently stated. “You’re just playing.”
