Kanye West’s Malibu Mansion Trial: Testimony Reveals Demanding Renovation Process

The civil trial concerning renovations to Kanye West’s former Malibu mansion continues to unfold in Los Angeles, with recent testimony detailing the artist’s exacting demands and the challenging conditions faced by workers. The case, brought by former project manager Tony Saxon, alleges unpaid wages and unsafe perform environments during the 2021 demolition and remodel of the beachfront property.

Shifting Instructions and Demanding Presence

Jeromy Holding, a self-described handyman, testified on Monday that Kanye West, now known as Ye, frequently visited the $57 million Malibu mansion during its demolition, providing constantly changing instructions. Holding described the instructions as often “nebulous” and recounted instances where West would pull workers aside for reprimands. He expressed dismay at the dismantling of the house, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando, calling it “bitchin” and “immaculate.”

A Kim Kardashian Encounter

Holding recounted an amusing anecdote involving a mistaken identity. He initially waved to a woman he believed to be Bianca Censori, an architectural designer on the project, only to be corrected by West, who identified the woman as his then-wife, Kim Kardashian. This led to a brief, awkward exchange and a subsequent confrontation with West, who questioned Holding’s intentions.

Demolition Without Permits and a Vision for an “Off-Grid” Home

Testimony has revealed that West directed Saxon to demolish portions of the home without obtaining the necessary permits. Saxon testified that West envisioned transforming the property into an “off-the-grid” bunker, disconnecting it from public utilities and removing traditional plumbing and electrical systems. He even proposed a system to treat “his urine and feces into fresh water for drinking and bathing,” a concept Saxon investigated with plumbers and other experts, though it was never implemented.

Safety Concerns and Alleged Retaliation

Saxon claims he was fired after raising safety concerns about a proposed power plan involving fuel-powered generators. He testified that West became agitated when Saxon pointed out that the electricity was still functioning, despite the intention to disconnect it. According to Saxon, West responded with threats, stating, “If you don’t do what I request you to do, you’re an enemy. You’re a Clinton. You’re a Kardashian. And I won’t be your friend anymore, and you’re only gonna see me on the TV and the news.”

Evolving Plans and Lack of Permits

Holding corroborated Saxon’s account, stating that West’s plans for the property were constantly evolving, ranging from a private school to a bomb shelter, a monastery, a recording studio, and even a playground with slides and ramps. He confirmed that no permits were obtained for the renovation work, acknowledging that securing them from the California Coastal Commission would likely have taken years.

Injuries and Unqualified Oversight

Holding testified that he observed Saxon appearing to be in pain at the job site, “hunching, holding his back,” after using a jackhammer and during the removal of chimney stacks. West’s attorney, Andrew Cherkasky, challenged Saxon’s qualifications, questioning how someone with no experience, licenses, or engineering degree could be entrusted with overseeing the renovation of a $57 million mansion.

Ongoing Legal Battles

This lawsuit is the first of several civil complaints filed by former employees of West to reach trial. West has faced over a dozen lawsuits following controversial remarks in 2022, and subsequently issued public apologies, including a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal in January, attributing his behavior to bipolar disorder and past head trauma.
