Paolini Ends Boulter’s Winning Streak at Merida Open

Jasmine Paolini secured a semi-final spot at the Merida Open, overcoming a stunning start by Katie Boulter with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Boulter’s Strong Start and Paolini’s Response

Britain’s Katie Boulter entered the quarterfinal match on a seven-match winning streak, highlighted by her recent title win at the Ostrava Open. She dominated the first set, winning it 6-0 in just 28 minutes without dropping a game. Paolini initially struggled, winning only three points on her serve during the opening set.

However, Paolini quickly adjusted her strategy. She began the second set strongly, holding serve for the first time and then breaking Boulter to take a 3-1 lead. Boulter responded with a break of her own, but the momentum shifted as neither player consistently held serve, ultimately leading to Paolini winning the second set 6-3.

Decisive Third Set

The Italian continued her momentum into the deciding set, racing to a 2-0 lead. While Boulter managed to break back and hold serve to level the score at 3-2, Paolini regained control, winning four consecutive games to close out the match and advance to the semi-finals.

Paolini Reflects on the Match

“It was a really tough one – Katie, the first set she was smashing every ball and hitting a winner everywhere,” Paolini told Sky Sports. “I was telling myself to play more deep in the court and hit the ball harder because I had to raise the level to try and win the match and in the conclude it worked out.” She also emphasized the importance of staying calm and focused, stating, “I was trying to be calm, to think what I had to do. I think when you’re nervous you can’t find the solutions.”

The defeat ends Boulter’s impressive run in Merida, while Paolini continues her strong season.
