Kentucky Basketball Stumbles Against Georgia, Distractions Plague Wildcats
LEXINGTON, KY – The Kentucky Wildcats suffered a disappointing 86-78 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday night at Rupp Arena, a result marred by defensive lapses and offensive distractions, according to head coach Mark Pope. The loss drops Kentucky to 17-8 overall and 8-4 in SEC play.
First-Half Struggles and Georgia’s Momentum
Kentucky initially led for approximately 14 minutes of the first half, but a series of seven turnovers that resulted in 10 points for Georgia allowed the Bulldogs to seize the lead before halftime. Georgia closed the half on a 10-3 run, limiting Kentucky to just one field goal in the final four minutes and taking a seven-point advantage into the break.
Second-Half Collapse and Defensive Concerns
Georgia extended its lead to 12 points with 9:20 remaining in the second half, shooting 57% from three-point range in the second half. Despite a late rally that narrowed the deficit to three points with 2:13 left, Kentucky ultimately fell short. Coach Pope expressed significant concern over his team’s defensive performance, stating, “We were not solid defensively. (In the) second half, they (Bulldogs) shoot 57% from three. That’s a poor commentary on defensive effort.”
Pope Points to Distractions and Turnovers
Mark Pope attributed the Wildcats’ struggles to a lack of focus, particularly on the offensive end. “We just allowed ourselves to get distracted,” Pope said. “We actually started the game well. We were functioning well and then we just let Georgia get into a flow in transition, which is what they do and we never really fully recovered in the second half.” Kentucky finished the game with 13 turnovers, leading to 22 points for Georgia, although the Bulldogs recorded 20 assists to just 7 turnovers.
Cyril’s Dominance for Georgia
Georgia’s success was significantly bolstered by the performance of center Somto Cyril, a former Kentucky commit. Pope praised Cyril’s impact, noting, “If he’s not the biggest player in the league, he’s close to it. … He’s an elite-level offensive rebounder. He’s causing some real pain in there.” Cyril leads the SEC in blocked shots at 2.52 per game and is shooting 74.8% from the field this season.
Oweh’s Strong Performance Not Enough
Despite the team’s overall struggles, Otega Oweh delivered a strong individual performance, scoring a season-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Though, Pope acknowledged that even Oweh’s efforts were hampered by the team’s overall breakdowns.
Looking Ahead and Bench Rotation
Kentucky will look to rebound on Saturday against Auburn. Pope also indicated a desire to expand his team’s rotation, seeking to reduce the minutes played by key starters like Otega Oweh and Denzel Aberdeen. “We probably can’t have Otega at 38 [minutes] and DA [Denzel Aberdeen] at 36 since our performance suffers as those guys get fatigued,” Pope stated. Kentucky’s bench contributed only eight points in the loss.
