Kilkenny Hurling Manager Derek Lyng Labels Performance ‘Unacceptable’ After Galway Defeat

Galway defeated Kilkenny by a score of 0-35 to 0-17 in a National Hurling League Division 1A match at Pearse Stadium on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng described his team’s performance as “unacceptable” following the 18-point loss.

Lyng Expresses Disappointment

Speaking after the match, Lyng stated his dissatisfaction with Kilkenny’s energy and overall performance. “We have to be honest with ourselves. That was unacceptable. Everybody in there [the dressingroom] knows that. I didn’t think we had enough energy at all, way too passive. I’m responsible for that. And it wasn’t good enough,” he said according to the Irish Times.

Galway Dominance

Thirteen Galway players contributed to the scoring, with the team adding five points more in the second half despite playing against the wind. Aaron Niland led the scoring for Galway with 0-9 points, including two from play and one 65. Cian Kenny scored three points from play and two frees for Kilkenny, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the significant defeat. The Irish Times reported the final score.

Sickness and Injuries in Kilkenny Camp

Lyng acknowledged that there has been sickness within the Kilkenny camp recently, but refused to use this as an excuse for the poor performance. He confirmed that all players who took the field were fit to play. The Irish Examiner noted Lyng’s stance on the matter. He also mentioned that several Kilkenny players are recovering from long-term injuries and may be available for upcoming matches.

Looking Ahead to the Leinster Championship

Kilkenny is scheduled to return to Pearse Stadium in six weeks for their opening game in the Leinster championship. Lyng acknowledged the need for significant improvement before that match. “It has to be. There is a big gap to make up there. It is a quiet dressing room in there. Everybody is disappointed. There is nothing we can do only work through it now,” Lyng stated.

Galway Manager Remains Measured

Galway manager Micheál Donoghue was pleased with the win but cautioned against overconfidence. “Happy. It is two points, that’s all it is,” he said. He emphasized the importance of consistency and efficiency in his team’s performance. Galway Bay FM reported on Donoghue’s post-match comments.
