Prime Minister Kim Clashes with Broadcaster Over U.S. Visit Interpretation

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has publicly criticized broadcaster Kim Eo-jun, dismissing his interpretation of the Prime Minister’s recent U.S. Visit as a “next-generation leader development program” as an “absurd fantasy.” The exchange highlights tensions between the government and certain media outlets in South Korea.

Prime Minister’s Response

In a Facebook post on March 16th, Prime Minister Kim expressed “some disappointment with domestic media coverage” of his trip, which began on March 12th. He refuted the claim that his diplomatic activities were part of a succession plan orchestrated by President Lee Jae Myung. “It is true that the President always tells me to fulfill my constitutional and legal authority and role in performing prime ministerial duties, and it is true that he told me to actively engage in Korea-U.S. Issues. However, he has never told me to gain diplomatic experience, and describing all of this as part of grooming a next presidential candidate is absurd fantasy,” Kim wrote according to Sedaily.

Kim further stated that public service “is not the subject of such martial arts novels, and the media is not a martial arts fiction factory.” He also emphasized the importance of journalistic ethics and urged the opposition, ruling party, and media to fulfill their respective roles as reported by The Korea Mk.

Kim Eo-jun’s Initial Commentary

The criticism stemmed from comments made by Kim Eo-jun on his YouTube channel, “Kim Eo-jun’s Humility Is Hard News Factory.” Kim Eo-jun suggested that President Lee Jae Myung had instructed Prime Minister Kim to “actively gain diplomatic experience” and “utilize it for state affairs,” interpreting this as a move to cultivate potential future presidential candidates as noted by The Chosun Ilbo.

Further Disputes and Concerns

Prime Minister Kim also took issue with reports regarding North Korea’s response to what was described as President Trump’s “love call,” stating that such characterizations lacked factual basis and demonstrated a lack of common sense according to The Korea Mk. He questioned the causality suggested in these reports, noting other potential factors influencing North Korea’s actions.

Civic Group Complaint

Adding to the controversy, a civic group, Citizens Action, filed a complaint against Kim Eo-jun, alleging defamation and accusing him of spreading false information to undermine Prime Minister Kim as reported by The Korea Khan. The group claims Kim Eo-jun has a close relationship with Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae.

Prime Minister’s U.S. Itinerary

During his U.S. Visit, Prime Minister Kim held meetings with Vice President JD Vance, President Donald Trump, White House religious advisor Paula White, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy director Michael Kratsios, and Senator Andy Kim. He also participated in roundtables with Korean companies operating in the United States.
