Jimmy Kimmel Accuses FCC Chair of ‘Deliberately Sabotaging’ Net Neutrality

Jimmy Kimmel is accusing Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Ajit Pai of deliberately sabotaging net neutrality rules, claiming Pai timed the release of a plan to dismantle the regulations to coincide with the holiday season when fewer people woudl be paying attention.

“This guy, Ajit Pai, he’s a real piece of work,” Kimmel said on his show Monday night. “He’s the chairman of the FCC, and he’s trying to get rid of net neutrality. And he’s doing it sneakily, like a villain in a James Bond movie.”

Kimmel explained that net neutrality rules prevent internet service providers from speeding up or slowing down access to certain websites or charging extra for faster service. He argued that without these rules, isps could essentially control what people see and do online.

“Imagine if your cable company could decide to make Netflix really slow unless Netflix paid them extra money,” Kimmel said. “Or if they could block websites they don’t like. That’s what could happen if we don’t have net neutrality.”

He then pointed out the timing of Pai’s announcement. “He announced this plan right before Thanksgiving, when everyone is busy with family and turkey and football, hoping nobody would notice,” Kimmel said. “It’s a classic move by someone who knows they’re doing something unpopular.”

Kimmel urged viewers to contact their representatives and voice their opposition to the FCC’s plan. He also mocked Pai directly, suggesting he was motivated by a desire to please his corporate overlords.

“Ajit Pai used to work for Verizon,” Kimmel said. “So, you know, he’s just looking out for his friends. It’s not like he cares about the little people and their access to the internet.”

The FCC is scheduled to vote on the net neutrality plan on december 14th. Opponents of the plan are hoping to generate enough public pressure to convince the FCC to reconsider.

Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension Sparks Outcry and Raises Concerns About Free Speech

The suspension of “Jimmy kimmel Live!” following host Jimmy Kimmel’s commentary on the right-wing reaction to the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has ignited a firestorm of debate, raising serious questions about censorship and the influence of political pressure on media outlets.

Kimmel’s remarks, delivered on his show, drew immediate condemnation from conservative figures who called for his removal. Shortly after, ABC News announced the show would be suspended, a move widely seen as a direct response to the backlash and potential regulatory scrutiny.

The situation has prompted a wave of reactions from fellow comedians and media personalities. Conan O’Brien released a blunt statement criticizing the suspension, while others have expressed concern about the chilling effect this could have on late-night comedy and political satire.

Adding another layer to the controversy, Fox News host Laura Ingraham seemingly defended ABC’s decision, labeling it “smart business.” However, she also directed criticism towards a Trump governance official whose earlier comments appeared to lay the groundwork for potential FCC action against ABC.

At the heart of the matter lies a broader concern about the erosion of free speech and the increasing willingness of political actors to leverage their power to control the narrative. As one observer noted, Donald trump “wants the ability to control what is said and who can say it. And he’s been getting it.”

The suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is not simply about one late-night show or one comedian’s remarks. It’s a symptom of a larger trend – a trend that threatens the independence of the media and the principles of open discourse. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting the right to criticize, even when that criticism is uncomfortable or unpopular.
