UP TO eight members of the Kinahan cartel could face charges over the murder of Eddie Hutch, a former top cop claims.

Former Superintendent Martin Mooney also said mob boss Daniel Kinahan, 48, is one of the “persons of interest” named in a massive investigation file as garda close in on the cartel’s goons over the execution.

The huge file is currently being examined by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Charges that investigators from the Gardai’s North Central Division have recommended include murder, participation in an organised crime gang, directing the activities of an organised crime gang and facilitating an organised crime gang in the facilitation of a criminal offence.

Investigators do not believe that kingpin Daniel was a gunman in the hit, but that he gave the order for the murder after recruiting the hit team.

The suspected shooter is currently serving a long prison sentence while other suspected members of the kill squad have been involved in organised crime for years.

Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch’s brother Eddie was shot dead, aged 59, at his home in Poplar Row just three days after a Hutch hit squad stormed into the Regency Hotel and murdered David Byrne, 34, on February 6, 2016.

Speaking to The Irish Sun on the tenth anniversary of Eddie’s murder, Mr Mooney told of his hopes that decisions on the charges could be made over the coming months.

Mooney, who was based at Mountjoy Garda station before his retirement in 2023, told us: “The file that has been prepared for the DPP is one of the biggest I have ever seen during my 40 years in the force — the work that went into this investigation was phenomenal.

“No stone has been left unturned in this investigation and there are a number of people who have been recommended to face some very serious charges.

“My hope is we’ll get to hear of possible charges being brought against Daniel Kinahan and other senior figures within organised crime over the coming months.

“This was a very complex probe that spanned many countries and involved large streams of evidence being gathered. Recommended charges include murder, and hopefully the DPP will be satisfied with the level of investigation.”

Mr Mooney added: “It’s hard to believe that ten years have passed since the murder of Eddie Hutch.

“The investigation shows despite the passage of time evidence can still be gathered and a file presented to the DPP.

“The Kinahan organisation went into the north inner city that night with the sole purpose of causing maximum damage to Gerry Hutch by killing his brother.

“They brought terror to the streets of the north inner city in the early days of the feud and it’s great to see every effort being made to bring them to justice after all this time.”

BRAND NEW KINAHANS PODCAST

KINAHANS Downfall is the follow-up podcast to the international smash hit The Kinahans.

Millions of people listened to the first series which told the story of the ‘Dapper Don’ Christy Kinahan Snr’s improbable rise to become international criminal kingpin.

It finished up in 2023, just after the gang’s leaders were hit with US sanctions and a collective $15million bounty placed on their heads.

At that time, it seemed as if the end was imminent for Christy and his sons, Daniel and Christopher.

Kinahans Downfall, narrated again by the Irish Sun’s Damien Lane, reveals how the gang’s wealth has only grown in the meantime.

But while they flourish on the international stage, we reveal how the gang was dismantled in Ireland.

Using reconstructed garda wire taps, we unmask the kill crews who cops took down one by one.

The first two episodes dropped on January 28, with two more available every Wednesday for five weeks.

Mooney also said he thought the DPP has every right to take their time over this “because it has to be done properly”.

He said: “Due to the gangland legislation that we have, they have the option of bringing more than one charge against individuals.”

In the week before Eddie’s murder, investigators believe that he was directly contacted by Daniel Kinahan.

Officers suspect he approached the Monk’s older brother as part of his efforts to arrange a meeting.

The exiled crime boss requested the meeting just weeks after cartel killers Eamon Cumberton and Christopher Slator travelled to Lanzarote to try and kill Gerry Hutch.

But their mission failed when the veteran criminal fled from a pub after watching them walk into a bar.

Another senior Kinahan representative from the north inner city contacted Eddie Hutch but no meeting was ever arranged.

Detectives suspect the Kinahan killers may have been watching the movements of Eddie before finally killing him.

They also believe the Kinahan cartel had selected their hit teams in different parts of the capital for their onslaught against the Hutch clan and their associates.

Once the Regency happened, the contract killers and their “logistical” supporters swung into action and identified their targets.

Former Assistant Commissioner Pat Leahy also told of his hopes that charges could be brought against the Kinahan hit team.

Reflecting on the murder, Mr Leahy added: “There wasn’t much intelligence coming into us on that but an awful lot of work has gone into the investigation since.

“The murder of Eddie Hutch was appalling and I can’t help but think that the Kinahan organisation was already planning it.

“When the Regency happened we thought some of the key players would lie low but they struck at the heart of the Hutch family within three days.

“They seemed to have that hit team in place and they were tooled up and ready to go.

“It’s possible they were already planning something before the eventual murder of Eddie Hutch.”

RESOUNDING REGENCY ATTACK RESPONSE

Kinahan, Hutch Murder Plot: Mob Boss Faces Charges - Investigation Intensifies

Following the Regency Hotel attack in February 2016, and subsequent events, the relentless response by gardai has resulted in:

  • 51 interventions have taken place in threat-to-life incidents
  • 70 firearms seized
  • 4,376 rounds of ammunition seized
  • €31.8 million controlled drugs seized
  • €11.1 million cash seized

An Garda Síochana has successfully prosecuted 98 associates of the Hutch Organised Crime Group and the Kinahan Organised Crime Group before the courts for offences:

  • 19 murder-related
  • 25 attempted murder-related
  • 21 firearms
  • 22 drug trafficking
  • 21 money laundering

Some 15 of the persons convicted are associated with the Hutch Organised Crime Group.

And 83 of the persons convicted are associated with the Kinahan Organised Crime Group.

Further prosecution files are currently under consideration by the Director of Public Prosecutions and others are before the courts.

Leahy also said: “I hope that once the DPP examines every inch of the investigation file a decision is made to bring charges.

“A lot of senior figures connected to the Kinahan organisation are already in prison and I would love nothing more than to receive a call telling me that charges are being brought in this investigation.”

Former Lord Mayor Nial Ring also spoke to us on Eddie’s killing ten years on, saying: “There was and still is a lot of anger over Neddy’s murder.

“He was a popular figure in the area and wasn’t involved in any criminal organisation.

“Eddie was just a taxi driver for the local community and he was simply a soft and easy target for a ruthless criminal organisation.

“I hope that the DPP makes a positive decision over the Garda investigation file. And I hope that Neddy receives the justice he deserves.

“Ten years on and people still remember Neddy and know that he didn’t deserve to be gunned down in his own home.”

‘The Monk WILL run in by-election’

GERRY Hutch will definitely run in the Dublin Central by-election, film director Jim Sheridan has claimed.

The vote — triggered by ex-Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe’s departure to the World Bank last November — will be held later this year.

The top movie maker, who’s producing a documentary about The Monk’s political campaigns, said: “Yes, Gerry has told me he will definitely be running in the by-election.”

The man who Gardai alleged is the leader of the Hutch family Crime Organisation came within a whisker of winning a seat in the last general election.

He was leading the race for the last seat right up until the last count when he was then overtaken by Labour’s Marie Sherlock.

This week was the tenth anniversary of the Regency Hotel shooting which resulted in the attempted murder of Kinahan cartel boss Daniel Kinahan and the murder of his right hand man David Byrne.

Hutch was charged with the murder but found not guilty when he stood trial at the Special Criminal Court.

He is now back at his home in Lanzarote, where he is under investigation for money laundering, which he denies.

The Criminal Assets Bureau also hit The Monk with a €800,000 tax bill late last year which he disputes.

However, despite these obstacles Gerry, left, is adamant he will stand for election again. He looks likely to face campaigner Gillian Sherratt, tipped to run for Sinn Fein.

She is the mum of Harvey Morrison Sherratt, who died last year aged nine after waiting years for a spinal op.
