Kirby Smart Gives Update on Carson Beck's Status Ahead of Sugar Bowl

Ahead of the College Football Playoff, Georgia Bulldogs' head coach Kirby Smart provided an update on quarterback Carson Beck's status during an appearance on ESPN's College GameDay.

Beck's Absence and Family's Decision

While Smart didn't confirm reports that Beck would miss the entirety of the College Football Playoff, he shed light on the quarterback's absence. "He and his family down in Jacksonville, his team and staff and really group of people in his family have been trying to pursue the best options to go forward," Smart said. "We’ve talked to him. We’ve communicated with him, and we’re hoping for the best."

Beck suffered an elbow injury during the final play of the first half of the SEC Championship game.

Gunner Stockton Set to Start

In Beck's absence, Gunner Stockton is expected to start at quarterback. Stockton stepped in for Beck during the SEC Championship game, completing 12 of 16 pass attempts for 71 yards and an interception in the Bulldogs' 22-19 victory over Texas.

"He’s been a great competitor. He’s had some really great practices," Smart said of Stockton on College GameDay. "It’s been good to see him get reps and grow as a player. It’s been really enjoyable to watch him grow and go against that defense of ours. It’s been awesome for him.”

This will be Stockton's first career start in the Sugar Bowl, scheduled for January 1st at 8:45 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs have had ample time to prepare Stockton and integrate him into the offense.

Facing the Winner of Notre Dame vs. Indiana

Georgia will face the winner of the Notre Dame-Indiana game in the Sugar Bowl. This matchup takes place on Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Stay tuned for updates on the College Football Playoff as we get closer to kickoff!
