Bulgaria’s Political Landscape: Petkov’s Challenge to GERB’s Power

Kiril Petkov, co-chairman of the political party “Continuing the Change,” recently took to Facebook to address Bulgaria’s political landscape. Amidst preparations for a vote on the proposed cabinet led by Rosen Zhelyazkov, Petkov declared, "We will be a real opposition."

Petkov emphasized that GERB, the party currently in power, is unaccustomed to facing genuine opposition. While acknowledging the importance of supporting initiatives beneficial to Bulgaria, such as the convergent report on the Eurozone, he stressed the necessity of holding the new government accountable.

"We will monitor the actions of the ministers and give the new cabinet some time to prove itself," Petkov stated.

He highlighted pressing issues facing Bulgaria, including the implementation of the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, the passage of crucial bills concerning whistleblowers, anti-corruption measures, and personal bankruptcy, and fiscal discipline. Petkov emphasized the importance of scrutinizing the government’s approach to income policy, budget deficits, and state expenditures.

Concerns regarding potential misuse of power also surfaced, with Petkov stating, "We will monitor whether, through the resolutions of the Council of Ministers, they will allocate funds to their associates, companies, or mayors."

Petkov also commented on recent amendments to the Judiciary Act, which limit the tenure of acting attorneys general. While acknowledging the changes as a "partial victory," he described the outcome as "not the most optimal, but still a step forward."

As Bulgaria navigates this pivotal moment in its political journey, Petkov’s remarks underscore the importance of transparency, accountability, and effective governance. His party’s role as a vigilant opposition will undoubtedly shape the country’s trajectory.
