John Klingberg: Returning to Ice After Year-Long Absence
Free agent defenseman John Klingberg is set to lace up his skates again after a year’s absence due to hip surgery. As reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Klingberg is aiming to resume skating shortly after the holiday break, hoping to reignite his NHL career.
A Dominant Early Career
Klingberg, 32, enjoyed a stellar start to his NHL journey. The Swedish defenseman earned a spot on the 2015 All-Rookie Team and consistently ranked among the league’s top offensive blue liners. During his tenure with the Dallas Stars, he accumulated 291 points in 425 games (from 2014-15 to 2019-20), placing him 10th among defensemen league-wide. His impressive 0.68 points per game average showcased his offensive prowess.
Decline and Searching for a New Home
However, Klingberg’s production began to wane in subsequent seasons. His ice time decreased, and his on-ice goal differential suffered. Despite remaining a threat offensively, racking up 47 points in the 2021-22 season, he entered free agency the following summer with limited interest in long-term contracts. This led to a “prove-it” deal with the rebuilding Anaheim Ducks. His stint in Anaheim proved unsuccessful, followed by a mid-season trade to the Minnesota Wild. Neither team offered a significant platform for Klingberg to showcase his skills.
Back Injury and Uncertain Future
Klingberg signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2023-24 season. While initially quarterbacking their top power-play unit and contributing five assists in 14 games, a persistent hip issue, ultimately requiring season-ending surgery, cut his time short. Recovering from such a major operation at 32 years of age presents a significant challenge.
Realistic Outlook
If Klingberg does manage to find an NHL team for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, it’s unlikely to be in a top-four role with significant ice time. A minimum-salary one-year contract with a third-pairing role and second-unit power-play responsibilities seems more realistic.
The upcoming offseason will be a pivotal moment for Klingberg. Will he be able to rebound and regain his form, or will this injury mark the end of his NHL career?
