Star Wars: Knights of the Ancient Republic Remake Still in Development

Despite a tumultuous development cycle spanning over five years, Saber Interactive’s remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remains in active development. The confirmation comes from Saber Interactive’s chief creative officer, Tim Willits, in a recent interview with IGN.

Development History and Challenges

Originally announced in 2021, the KOTOR remake has faced significant hurdles. In December 2025, reports surfaced indicating that Aspyr, the initial lead developer, was no longer at the helm. Development responsibilities were reportedly transferred to Mad Head Games, the studio behind Hellraiser: Revival [1].

Saber Interactive Takes the Lead

Following the shift in development teams, Saber Interactive assumed control of the project. Willits’ statement, “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say,” offers a degree of reassurance to fans who have eagerly awaited updates on the remake’s progress [1], [4].

Potential Sequel Remake Discussions

Lucasfilm Games has also explored the possibility of remaking Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. According to Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly, discussions were underway with Aspyr regarding a full remake of KOTOR 2, codenamed “Juliet,” aiming to modernize the game’s art, gameplay and graphics although preserving the original story and characters [1].

Franchise Overview

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing video game franchise created and developed by BioWare and Obsidian Entertainment. The first game was released in 2003, with subsequent titles appearing on various platforms including Windows, Xbox, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch [1]. The franchise is set in the Star Wars universe and has also spawned comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics, serving as prequels to the video games [1].

The future of both the original KOTOR remake and potential plans for a KOTOR 2 remake remain uncertain, but Saber Interactive’s confirmation provides a glimmer of hope for fans of the beloved RPG series.
