Driver Charged Over Tampines Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed Couple

A fatal multi-vehicle collision on October 29 left a motorcyclist and his pregnant wife dead, sparking a nine-charge indictment against a 30-year-old driver who allegedly fled the scene, according to The Straits Times. Muhammad Zulfiqar Abdul Aziz faced court on October 31 following the late-night crash at Tampines Avenue 12.

Police arrested Zulfiqar and a 29-year-old female passenger the following day near West Coast Road. Court charge sheets revealed that Zulfiqar drove a blue Audi despite being under a six-year driving disqualification running from March 2026 to March 2032. Prosecutors noted he had prior convictions for driving while under disqualification in November 2021 and July 2025.

Charges and Court Proceedings for The Accused Driver

Zulfiqar received nine distinct charges, including dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing hurt, driving under disqualification, and failing to stop or render assistance after an accident. Additional charges cover using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage, driving a deregistered vehicle, operating without a licence, and exhibiting a false licence plate.

The judge denied bail after finding the accused posed a flight risk. The court scheduled the next hearing for November 27. If convicted of dangerous driving causing death, Zulfiqar faces up to eight years in prison. Convictions for using a deregistered vehicle carry a penalty of up to two years in jail and a S$20,000 fine.

Survivor Trauma and Vehicle Losses After The Collision

Mira, a 25-year-old driver whose car was struck during the crash, sustained no serious physical injuries but is currently seeking psychiatric treatment for trauma, according to Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng. Baey visited the victim and shared updates via social media.

The collision completely destroyed the car Mira was driving, which belonged to her father. Because her father relies on the vehicle to commute to his job on Jurong Island, the loss has severely impacted the family’s livelihood. Baey and grassroots leaders discussed legal advice and insurance claim referrals to support the family.

Traffic Fatalities Reach Ten-Year High Amid Rising Accident Rates

The tragedy highlights broader safety issues on Singaporean roads. Traffic fatalities reached a 10-year high of 149 deaths in 2025, up from 141 in 2016. Injuries from traffic accidents also climbed from 9,342 in 2024 to 9,955 in 2025.

Authorities recorded a sharp rise in the illegal use of deregistered vehicles. Land Transport Authority investigation figures show cases jumped from 40 in 2022 to 75 in 2024, before surging to 245 in 2025. In the first five months of 2026 alone, investigators probed 122 similar incidents.

Organizer Promises Complete Transparency for Online Fundraising Campaign

The victims—both 24 years old—were buried next to each other at Choa Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery on October 30. Family members confirmed the couple was expecting their second child. They leave behind a six-year-old son, whose identity is protected by a court gag order.
