Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority Launches Nationwide Maritime Safety Broadcast

The Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA) has begun full operation of its self-produced ‘Maritime Transportation Internet Broadcasting’ in March 2026, expanding marine safety information access across the nation. The initiative, led by KOMSA President Kim Jun-seok, aims to enhance maritime safety by delivering crucial information directly to passengers and those involved in maritime activities.

What is Maritime Transportation Internet Broadcasting?

‘Maritime Transportation Internet Broadcasting’ is an on-site public channel utilizing Internet Protocol (IP) transmission. It broadcasts marine safety content created by KOMSA through IPTV devices installed in key locations, including 20 passenger ship terminals nationwide [1]. The service transmits a variety of marine safety information continuously.

Pilot Program and Expansion

KOMSA conducted a three-month pilot program starting in December 2025. Following the successful trial, the broadcasting schedule was expanded to 15 hours daily, from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, aligning with passenger terminal operating hours [1]. Currently, 22 IPTV transmission devices are deployed across 20 passenger ship terminals.

Content Creation and Growth

KOMSA has been actively strengthening its content production capabilities since establishing a dedicated studio in Sejong City in 2022. Over the past three years, content production on the KOMSA YouTube channel, ‘Haesuho TV,’ has increased approximately twelvefold, with subscriber numbers growing five times over [1]. KOMSA has also established a track record of collaboration with local terrestrial broadcasting stations, ensuring high-quality content delivery.

Future Plans and Wider Reach

Building on the success at passenger ship terminals, KOMSA plans to extend the broadcasting network to other high-demand areas, including fishing villages and coastal multi-use facilities. This expansion will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and related organizations [1]. KOMSA also intends to standardize content production, programming, and operation to develop a nationwide maritime safety information distribution network.

Statement from KOMSA Chairman

“Maritime transportation internet broadcasting is meaningful in going beyond the limitations of digital platform-centered promotion and allowing people to naturally access marine safety information in their living spaces,” stated KOMSA Chairman Kim Jun-seok. “We will expand the deployment to everyday contact spaces to strengthen the marine safety communication system that the public can sense.” [1]
