Kon Knueppel Joins Greensboro Swarm For Practice in Hamstring Recovery

Charlotte Hornets forward Kon Knueppel practiced with the Greensboro Swarm on Thursday, taking his first on-court steps toward returning from a left hamstring strain. Although the 21-year-old sharpshooter remains listed as out for Friday’s matchup against the Washington Wizards, his assignment to the team’s G League affiliate marks a clear progression in his recovery. Knueppel suffered the injury over a month ago during what the Hornets termed “offseason on-court activity,” missing the entirety of training camp and the first five games of the regular season.

Timeline of the Injury and Recovery

The hamstring strain occurred shortly before NBA teams reported for training camp. Last season, the No. 4 overall pick out of Duke finished second in Rookie of the Year voting behind Cooper Flagg. Knueppel averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists across 81 games while leading the league with 273 3-pointers on 43% shooting. His play helped lift the Hornets from a 19-63 record in 2024-25 to a 44-38 finish and a play-in tournament berth as the No. 9 seed.

According to NBA insider Brett Siegel, players returning from stints on the injury report practice with the G League affiliate as a way to simulate things at a higher level. The same thing occurred with Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics last season when he was returning from a torn Achilles tendon. Friday’s game in Washington opens a back-to-back set for Charlotte, which hosts the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, leaving open the possibility of a return against the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

Charlotte Rotation and Upcoming Schedule

The Hornets have navigated the early portion of the schedule without Knueppel, Coby White, who nurses a left calf strain, and Grant Williams, sidelined by a right hamstring strain. Charlotte holds a 3-2 record following a 97-89 loss to Detroit on Wednesday. Brandon Miller paces the offense with 25.6 points per contest, while Naz Reid contributes 17 points and 8.8 rebounds. Head coach Charles Lee benched Reid for the second half against the Pistons for not meeting team standards, underscoring the team’s need for reinforcements like Knueppel.
