KOŠICE – The highest attendance in the current year, a great atmosphere, whipped emotions and great hockey drama. Friday’s 12th round hit between Košice and Slovan Bratislava brought all this.
“This hockey had to be fun for everyone,” started his assessment of the match Michal Dostál, the assistant of the Canadian coach of the “Whites” Brad Tapper.
And he’s right. Once again, it was confirmed that there is no more prestigious match in our region than the fight between the two sovereignly most prosperous clubs representing the two largest Slovak cities and hockey bastions.
The derby received the nickname “Match of the month”, it was written about in the media and on social networks throughout the week, and the Košice club did everything to finaly sell out the Steel Arena.
While in the five home matches so far – against Liptovský mikuláš, Spišská Nová Ves, Zvolen, Banská bystrica and most recently Trenčín – the ten-time champions of Slovakia could not even fill half the stadium, the biggest rival of the “steel players” traditionally attracted masses of fans, including a large number of children. In the official record, the number 6992 is lit, it even seemed to us that there were even more people sitting in the auditorium.
Either way, the confrontation between the two old rivals did not disappoint at all. Not only on the ice, but also in the stands.
“I already experienced the derby with Košice last year and I like these matches the most. They are intense, the fans give everything, and so do us players.” said Tomáš Královič, Slovan’s hero and scorer of the winning goal, in the mix zone.
The opening third was poor in terms of chances.Slovan had more of the game, but did not develop more consistent pressure. There was no shortage of emotions on the ice, which resulted in mass brawls more than once. both teams played with commitment and focused on careful defensive play, so the spectators did not see a goal.
Paradoxically, the power plays helped Košice, although they did not play them optimally and did not score, but it was thanks to them that they started to appear much more active and threatened the goalkeeper Henri Kiviah more often.
The closest to opening the score was Peter Repčík after a predatory penetration into the attacking zone, but his swing shot only stamped the right post.
Since even Slovan did not take advantage of several shooting opportunities, including a chance in the last seconds, the unpopular score 0:0 appeared on the dice after the first horn.
