Shingwedzi Rest Camp Reopens in Kruger National Park After Flood Damage

One of Kruger National Park’s popular rest camps, Shingwedzi, is set to reopen to visitors on March 6, 2026, after being closed for over a month due to extensive flood damage. The reopening will be facilitated through the Punda Maria and Pafuri gates, as access via Letaba remains restricted due to ongoing repairs.

Flood Impact and Recovery Efforts

Severe flooding in January 2026 caused widespread infrastructure damage throughout the northern regions of Kruger National Park, leading to the closure of several camps. The greater Limpopo province has been significantly impacted, with an estimated R10 billion needed for full restoration, and R800 million already allocated for immediate relief efforts. Approximately 400 roads, totaling 60 km, were damaged, affecting over 3,000 households.

Access and Restrictions

Visitors intending to access Shingwedzi Rest Camp must currently enter through the Punda Maria or Pafuri gates. Repairs are underway on the Letaba high water bridge, which connects the tar road between Mopani and Letaba Rest Camps. South African National Parks (SANParks) will announce when the bridge is safe for leverage.

Other Camp Updates

Several other camps have already reopened or are partially accessible:

  • Punda Maria Rest Camp: Currently open.
  • Bateluer Bush Camp: Reopened, but temporarily closed again due to recent rains and directing guests to nearby camps.
  • Mopani Rest Camp: Partially open and accessible through the Punda Maria or Pafuri gates.
  • Olifants Rest Camp: Accessible through the Phalaborwa gate.

Safety Reminders

SANParks is urging all visitors to adhere to safety guidelines and obey all posted signage. Specifically, guests are warned not to access gravel roads marked with “No Entry” signs. “Our teams are working tirelessly to restore infrastructure and ensure that Kruger National Park remains a safe and enjoyable destination for all,” stated SANParks spokesperson JP Louw.
