Europe’s Future in Your Wallet: ECB Unveils Designs for Next Generation Euros
The European Central Bank (ECB) is taking a bold step towards modernizing Europe’s currency, launching a captivating design competition to shape the future look of euro banknotes. This exciting initiative, building on consultations initiated in 2022, marks a significant milestone twenty years after the introduction of the current euro banknotes.
Open exclusively to European designers, the competition invites creativity and innovation, allowing citizens to actively participate in shaping the visual identity of Europe’s currency.
Two distinct themes, carefully selected after extensive engagement with European citizens, stand as contenders for the coveted title.
The first theme, "European Culture," celebrates the continent’s rich tapestry of artistic, scientific, and literary achievements. Imagine iconic figures like Maria Callas, the renowned Greek opera singer, adorning the €5 note, alongside a depiction of street artists representing the vibrant world of European performance art. Ludwig van Beethoven, the legendary composer, would grace the €10 note, paying homage to music’s enduring power. Marie Curie, the pioneering French scientist, would be celebrated on the €20 note, highlighting Europe’s contributions to scientific knowledge. The €50 note could be dedicated to "Don Quixote," the timeless masterpiece by Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes, while Leonardo da Vinci, the epitome of artistic engineering, would adorn the €100 note. Bertha von Suttner, the Austrian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, would feature on the €200 note, symbolizing the pursuit of peace.
The second theme, "Rivers and Birds," embodies concepts of freedom, fluidity, and interconnectedness. Each denomination would feature unique representations of rivers and birds, with elements like mountains, the European Parliament, and the ECB logo interwoven into the designs.
The public will have a crucial voice in shaping the future of the euro. Early in 2026, citizens will have the opportunity to weigh in on the pre-selected designs before the ECB makes its final decision.
While the new banknotes are still a few years away, excitement is building as Europe prepares to welcome a fresh and inspiring new look to its currency.
