Cal Rowing athletes Represent on the World Stage at U23 Championships
A significant cohort of rowers with ties to the University of California,Berkeley are poised to compete at the prestigious 2025 U23 World Rowing Championships. The event,a crucial stepping stone for athletes aspiring to senior-level international success, will showcase the dedication and skill honed within the Cal rowing programme. This year’s championships are particularly noteworthy,as rowing continues to gain popularity globally, with a 15% increase in viewership for major international events in the last two years, according to World Rowing statistics.
American representation: Gagnon and Morton Lead the Charge
Representing the United States will be two Cal athletes. Luc Gagnon will participate in the challenging men’s eight event. He recently contributed to an Australian bronze medal-winning performance in the same discipline at the 2024 U23 World Championships, demonstrating his adaptability and competitive spirit. Alongside him, Henry Morton will compete in the men’s four. Morton is a seasoned competitor at this level, having previously earned silver medals in the men’s eight at both the 2024 and 2023 U23 Championships – a testament to his consistent performance and resilience. To put this in perspective, achieving multiple podium finishes at the U23 level is akin to consistently reaching the quarter-finals in a Grand Slam tennis tournament; it signifies a high level of sustained excellence.
International Athletes with Cal Connections
The Cal influence extends beyond the American team. Great britain will be represented by Callum Gauden in the fiercely contested men’s double sculls. Gauden’s prior international experience includes a silver medal in the quadruple sculls at the 2023 U19 championships, highlighting his rapid progression through the ranks.
Simultaneously occurring,Spain will field Javier Moreno in the men’s four. Moreno brings a wealth of experience, including a gold medal victory in the men’s four at the 2021 World rowing Junior Championships, and participation in the 2022 U23 championships in the quadruple sculls. His journey mirrors that of many elite rowers, starting with junior success and building towards U23 and possibly senior-level competition.
Rounding out the Cal contingent is Ben Waddell, who will contribute to New Zealand’s efforts in the men’s eight. This marks his second appearance at the U23 championships, following his participation in the men’s coxed four at the 2023 event.
