UK Sports Business Roundup: New Commercial Partnerships and Leadership Appointments
The UK sports landscape is undergoing a series of commercial and leadership shifts, highlighted by the Elite Ice Hockey League’s (EIHL) five-season naming rights deal with Motorpoint and the appointment of former Manchester United executive Ian Nolan as the new Chief Executive of the Rugby Football League (RFL). These moves, alongside new partnerships for Great Britain Basketball and Pickleball England, signal a push toward increased commercialization and infrastructure growth across British sports.
Motorpoint Secures Elite Ice Hockey League Naming Rights

The Elite Ice Hockey League has entered a five-season partnership with automotive retailer Motorpoint, rebranding the competition as the “Motorpoint Elite League” through 2031. This agreement marks the first time a professional sports league has yielded its naming rights to the car retailer.
According to the official league announcement, the deal includes integrated branding across team jerseys, on-ice logos, and rink-side advertising. The EIHL also confirmed that the league’s playoff finals weekend will continue to be hosted at the Motorpoint Arena. EIHL Chairman Tony Smith stated that the partnership aims to support the league’s growing attendance figures and facilitate the development of new franchises.
Ian Nolan Named CEO of the Rugby Football League

The Rugby Football League has appointed Ian Nolan as its new Chief Executive, effective October 1, 2026. Nolan, 44, succeeds Tony Sutton, who stepped down in September.
Nolan brings two decades of sports industry experience to the RFL, including a seven-year tenure leading the global media network at Manchester United and a stint as Chief Marketing Officer at Science in Sport. Nigel Wood, Chair of the RFL and RL Commercial, stated that the appointment is part of a “bold and ambitious” strategy to increase revenue and expand the sport’s digital footprint. Until Nolan assumes the role, Managing Director of Rugby League Commercial Rhodri Jones will continue to share interim leadership duties with Abi Ekoku.
Great Britain Basketball Partners with University of East London
Great Britain Basketball has finalized an agreement with the University of East London (UEL) to utilize the university’s SportsDock facilities as the official training base for its national U21 and U23 3×3 programs.
The partnership strengthens an existing link between the institutions, as senior internationals Paige Robinson and Holly Winterburn are both UEL alumni. Meehra Gorasia, GB 3×3 Programme Manager, noted that the facility provides an environment consistent with the standards required for the Great Britain pathway. The agreement is set to support the national teams throughout the summer training period.
