Latvia Allocates €10 Million to NATO-US Initiative Supporting Ukraine’s Defense
On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers approved a draft order allocating €10 million from the Ministry of Defense budget to the NATO and United States initiative supporting Ukraine, known as “PURL” (Prioritized Ukraine Requirement List). This funding will contribute to the procurement of critical armaments and equipment for Ukraine’s armed forces.
Strengthening Euro-Atlantic Solidarity
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine, stating that the allocated funds will bolster Ukraine’s combat capabilities. He also highlighted the commitment to Euro-Atlantic solidarity and the equitable sharing of the financial burden in supporting Ukraine’s defense against ongoing aggression.
The PURL Initiative: Facilitating US Defense Aid to Ukraine
The PURL initiative aims to streamline the purchase and transfer of US defense goods and services to Ukraine through donations from allied and partner nations. European countries and Canada are contributing financially to enable the acquisition of US-made military products, ensuring swift and efficient support for the Ukrainian armed forces.
Latvia’s Ongoing Commitment to Ukraine’s Military Support
Latvia is committed to providing Ukraine with military support amounting to at least 0.25% of its gross domestic product in 2026. This support will encompass several key areas, including:
- Provision of military industry goods manufactured in Latvia
- Contributions to the International Drone Coalition
- Training programs for Ukrainian soldiers
- Financial contributions to international support initiatives, including PURL
This commitment underscores Latvia’s dedication to assisting Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
