On Friday and Saturday night, Latvia will be hit by a snowstorm, which, according to weather forecasters, is likely to be the strongest this winter in many parts of the country.
Early Friday morning, a large precipitation zone will begin to cross Latvia from the southwest, bringing moderate to heavy snow and blizzards, with rain and sleet also expected at times in the southeast of the country.
Most of the country can expect 10-25 centimetres of fresh snow, with less snow in the northwest – in the Ventspils region and Kolkasrags, as well as in the Salacgrīva and Rūjiena areas. The east-northeast wind will intensify to 11–16 meters per second, and up to 20 meters per second on the Kurzeme coast of the Gulf of Riga.
A light snowstorm will begin in the capital on Friday morning, becoming heavy during the day; it will gradually subside on Saturday night.
Due to heavy snowfall and drifting snow, some roads may become impassable, and railway tracks may also be covered in snow in places.
On Saturday, the skies will clear in many places in the north-west of the country. The wind will blow from the north and gradually slow down, but it will still be strong enough to cause snowdrifts in some places.
Sunday will be mostly sunny. On Sunday morning and Monday night, the air temperature will drop to around -30 degrees Celsius in some places.
According to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the snow cover thickness at observation stations is currently 6-8 centimetres in Kolka, Mērsrags, Daugavgrīva, Ainaži and Rūjiena, up to 40 centimetres in Daugavpils, 45 centimetres in Piedruja, and 52 centimetres in Dagda.
