Latvia Condemns Iranian Attacks, Pledges Support for Regional Security
Riga, Latvia – March 6, 2026 – Latvia has strongly condemned recent unprovoked attacks by Iran on countries in the Middle East and Gulf region, reaffirming its solidarity with affected nations and offering assistance in bolstering regional security. The condemnation came during a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council convened by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas on March 5, 2026.
Latvian Stance at the EU-GCC Ministerial Meeting
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže emphasized that Iran’s actions pose a threat to regional and international peace and security, violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region. The EU and GCC adopted a joint statement outlining their concerns and unified response.
Braže also highlighted Latvia’s previous condemnation of Iran’s attacks at the UN Security Council. She expressed full solidarity with both the Iranian people and those affected by the attacks, acknowledging the resilience demonstrated by Middle Eastern and Gulf states in repelling the aggression.
Drone Technology Assistance
In a significant offer of support, Latvia has proposed providing anti-drone systems developed domestically to countries in the region. Braže informed her counterparts of Latvia’s advancements in drone technology, positioning the nation as a potential partner in strengthening regional defense capabilities. This offer comes as Iran has been actively utilizing Shahed drones in its attacks, the same drones supplied to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine .
Iran’s Destabilizing Actions and Regional Concerns
Latvia views Iran’s actions as a consistent and deliberate effort to disrupt stability, not only in the Middle East but globally. Braže specifically cited Iran’s direct support for Russia’s war against Ukraine as a key example of this destabilizing behavior.
The Foreign Minister underscored concerns regarding Iran’s systematic violation of international obligations and its threat to international peace and security. This includes decades of support, arming, financing, and training of terrorist groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. Iran continues to pursue its illicit nuclear program despite repeated diplomatic efforts from the EU, the UK, and the US, and engages in extensive sanctions evasion.
International Response and Diplomatic Efforts
Latvia has joined the EU’s joint statement on the situation in the Middle East and is maintaining close contact with its embassies, EU member states, and other international partners. Braže has engaged in direct conversations with foreign ministers from Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Azerbaijan, and Armenia since February 28th to discuss the evolving situation.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has also stated that Iran is seeking to escalate the conflict in the Middle East by indiscriminately attacking other countries . Kallas also expressed doubts about Iran’s ability to sustain its current pace of attacks, given its depleted military resources following conflicts last year .
Priority: De-escalation and Civilian Protection
Latvia’s priority remains the protection of civilians, the prevention of a wider regional conflict, and the de-escalation of tensions. Braže emphasized that stability in the region is essential for global security.
