Latvia Prioritizes Full Latvian Language Integration in Education
Riga, Latvia – As the official transition to Latvian-only education concludes, President Edgars Rinkēvičs emphasized the critical need to ensure all children effectively learn and utilize the Latvian language. The remarks came during a meeting with Education and Science Minister Dace Melbārde on Thursday, where they discussed key issues in education and sports, including the implementation of a new school financing model and adjustments to distance learning regulations.
Transition to Latvian Language Education
The shift to Latvian as the sole language of instruction formally concluded at the conclude of the current school year. President Rinkēvičs stressed that the success of this transition hinges on the support provided to teachers and the opportunities available for students to practice Latvian in real-world settings.
“Schools and students are different, therefore schools need flexible solutions and sufficient resources to ensure an appropriate learning environment and the necessary support for each child,” Rinkēvičs stated.
Distance Learning Regulations and Sports Sector Development
The conversation also addressed recent restrictions on distance learning for students in grades 1-6. Rinkēvičs underscored the importance of a careful and well-defined implementation process for municipalities, prioritizing the best interests of the child in all cases.
the officials discussed the development of the sports sector, with Rinkēvičs highlighting the role of accessible youth sports programs in promoting public health and fostering athletic achievement.
Survey Results on Latvian Language Usage
A 2025 survey commissioned by the Education and Science Ministry revealed increasing Latvian language usage among ethnic minority students outside of school. While 88 percent of students with a non-Latvian mother tongue reported that their Latvian language skills were helpful in life outside of school, approximately 20 percent still primarily used the language within the school environment. The survey also indicated that 70 percent of respondents believe extracurricular activities contribute to improved Latvian language proficiency.
Notably, the survey showed a discrepancy between student and parental reports, with students reporting wider use of Latvian in their daily lives than their parents perceived.
