Changwon LG Smart Park: Pioneering the Future of Home Appliance Manufacturing and Regional Growth
changwon, South Korea – LG Electronics’ Changwon Smart Park is rapidly establishing itself as a global leader in advanced manufacturing, driving innovation in the home appliance industry and serving as a cornerstone for economic advancement in the Gyeongnam province.Recently recognized as a “Lighthouse Factory” by the World Economic Forum – a frist for the domestic home appliance sector – the facility exemplifies the power of Industry 4.0 technologies and a commitment to enduring practices.
A Legacy of Manufacturing Excellence
Established in 1976 in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, the plant initially focused on mass production of home appliance components. Over the decades, it has evolved to meet changing market demands, transitioning to customized production and undergoing a complete conversion into a state-of-the-art smart factory four years ago. Today, Changwon LG Smart Park is the primary production hub for the vast majority of LG Electronics’ home appliances.
The Power of Intelligent Automation
The factory floor is a testament to the potential of intelligent automation. Robot arms work in concert, assembling refrigerators at a remarkable rate of five units per minute – a cycle time of just 12.5 seconds per unit. A sophisticated network of conveyor belts delivers parts in real-time, ensuring a seamless and efficient production process. This level of automation isn’t simply about speed; it’s about precision, quality, and worker safety.
“The place behind me is a lighthouse factory selected by the world Economic Forum in 2022,” explains Kim Jung-yeon,LG Electronics Exhibition manager. “It represents the core of future manufacturing technology – Industry 4.0 – and is one of only five such facilities in Korea, and the sole example in the Busan/Gyeongnam region.”
The “lighthouse” designation signifies a facility that successfully implements and integrates Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to deliver meaningful operational and financial benefits. Changwon LG smart Park achieves this by leveraging artificial intelligence, analyzing the vast data accumulated over 60 years of manufacturing experience.
Boosting Productivity and Sustainability
The integration of AI and automation has yielded extraordinary results. Productivity has increased by over 33% while simultaneously enhancing worker safety by automating hazardous and physically demanding tasks. Furthermore, the factory has prioritized sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly energy facilities and standards that have improved energy efficiency by 30%.
A Catalyst for Regional Development
LG Electronics’ commitment extends beyond its factory walls. The company is actively fostering collaboration with local universities, driving innovation and talent development within the Gyeongnam province. A recent agreement to establish a HVAC research center, with an investment of approximately 500 billion won (approximately $375 million USD), will attract leading researchers and product developers from around the globe.
“If these facilities are equipped, many of the best researchers and product development will be concentrated here, not only in Korea but also in the world,” notes lee Jae-sun, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Changwon University.
The economic impact of Changwon LG Smart Park is substantial.Last year alone, the facility generated 15 trillion won in sales – representing one-fifth of the total sales within the Changwon Industrial complex. The park directly employs 20,000 workers and serves as a vital engine for the region’s transition to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Lee Seung-hwan,Head of Public relations at the Changwon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasizes the company’s role in strengthening the local value chain. “LG Electronics has supported over 200 partners in building smart factories since 2019. They are leading innovation through AI-driven autonomous manufacturing, investing in Changwon’s 50-year home appliance legacy rather than relocating production to lower-cost countries.”
Investing in the Future Workforce
Looking ahead, LG Electronics plans to invest an additional 800 billion won in a new Changwon R&D Center, solidifying its commitment to developing a skilled workforce for the global home appliance market. This commitment is further demonstrated through a youth coaching program launched in May of this year, in partnership with Changwon City. The program pairs LG veterans with young professionals in Gyeongnam, providing mentorship and guidance to foster local talent.
“LG Electronics, as a responsible corporate citizen, is dedicated to addressing local challenges while strengthening our internal workforce,” explains Lee Gil-no, HR Managing Director at LG Electronics. “We are introducing programs to help local young people find employment in the region and contribute to its continued development.”
Changwon LG Smart Park is not merely a manufacturing facility; it is a model for the future of industry – a testament to the power of innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to regional prosperity.
