Leaders of Egypt, Türkiye, and Iran Call for Unity Amidst Regional Turmoil
The 11th Summit of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation brought together leaders from Egypt, Türkiye, Iran, and other developing nations in Cairo on Thursday. The summit focused on tackling regional challenges, including the ongoing crises in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.
Regional Challenges Dominate Summit Discussions
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi opened the summit, highlighting the “persistent Israeli war against the Palestinian people” and the fragile situations in Lebanon and Syria. He emphasized the global threats posed by conflicts, economic protectionism, and double standards.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed these concerns, urging concrete action to end Israel’s “aggressions.” His visit to Cairo marked the first time an Iranian president has stepped foot in the country in 11 years. Pezeshkian condemned Israel’s alleged use of starvation as a weapon and accused the nation of committing genocide against Palestinians.
Türkiye Focuses on Syria Reconstruction
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed Ankara’s close attention to developments in Syria and the urgent need for rapid rebuilding plans. He called for the D-8 to adapt to evolving global challenges and develop comprehensive recovery strategies.
Erdogan also advocated for expanding D-8 membership to enhance the organization’s global influence, welcoming Azerbaijan’s accession as a new member. The D-8, originally comprised of Egypt, Türkiye, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Bangladesh.
Calls for Solidarity and Cooperation
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged fellow nations to prioritize solidarity and joint action within the framework of international law. He emphasized the importance of cooperation for achieving sustainable development.
Attended by several non-D-8 members, including Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, the summit served as a platform for a united front.
Lebanon Urges Support Amidst Ongoing Crisis
Mikati called upon Arab nations to support Lebanon’s reconstruction efforts and contribute to sustainable development, particularly in light of recent Israeli “aggression.” He questioned the feasibility of discussing economic cooperation while war continues in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.
Empowering Youth as Key to Future Growth
The summit also emphasized the importance of empowering youth through support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The theme “Investing in Youth and Supporting SMEs: Shaping Tomorrow’s Economy” underscored the crucial role of these sectors in driving future economic growth and prosperity.
The 11th D-8 Summit demonstrated the commitment of developing nations to address shared challenges and explore avenues for collaboration in a rapidly changing world. Moving forward, ongoing dialogue and concrete action are essential to achieve regional stability and sustainable development.
