Leare Ren: ‘Ugly Sister’ Interview – Marie Claire Korea

Let’s talk about ‘beauty‘. Leare Miren starred in the body horror film Ugly Sister and sent an eerie invitation to this dialog. But in fact, the warmth and humor flowed in the face of facing each other. That moment was gorgeous.

Nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself.

Leare Miren. I’m 24 years old from Oslo, Norway.I recently played Elvira in Ugly Sister. This year,I came to Korea with the invitation of the Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival, and we will soon see our movie in the theater. I’m really excited.

what is Elbi who played in this work?

Elbi is a girl who has a big dream. I dream of marriage with the prince. In order to achieve that dream, that is, to be pretty enough for the prince, I try an extreme way. In fact, at the bottom, I have a desire to be loved as ‘as it is’. After all,Ugly Sister is a film that tells how challenging women are trying to fix something, how uncomfortable they feel, and how difficult it is indeed for most people to reach the standards of beauty. In a little grotesque way.But there’s also humor and love.

The Extreme Choices Women Make to Survive: A personal Reflection

Elbira’s story, though perhaps exaggerated on film, reflects a harsh reality for many women. It portrays the extreme choices women are forced to make simply to survive. As a woman myself, I deeply connected with the emotions depicted – feelings I’m still processing and learning to navigate. It’s a struggle to confront these realities, and to do so in a way that protects both my physical and emotional well-being.

The Allure of Quiet Luxury: A Timeless Aesthetic

Quiet luxury, also known as “stealth wealth,” is more than just a trend – it’s a lifestyle. It’s a rejection of ostentatious displays of wealth in favor of understated elegance, quality craftsmanship, and timeless style. This aesthetic has been gaining momentum, notably amongst those seeking a more refined and sophisticated approach to fashion and living.

But what exactly is quiet luxury? It’s about investing in pieces that will last, focusing on neutral colour palettes, and prioritizing fit and fabric over flashy logos. Think cashmere sweaters, perfectly tailored trousers, classic trench coats, and leather accessories that develop a beautiful patina over time. It’s a look that whispers quality rather than shouting it.

Key Elements of Quiet Luxury:

Neutral Color Palette: beiges, creams, grays, navy, and black form the foundation of this aesthetic. These colors are versatile, sophisticated, and easily integrated into a timeless wardrobe.
high-Quality Materials: Cashmere, silk, linen, and fine wools are staples. The focus is on fabrics that feel luxurious and drape beautifully.
impeccable Fit: Tailoring is crucial. Clothes should fit perfectly, enhancing the wearer’s silhouette.
Minimal Branding: Logos are either absent or subtly incorporated. The quality of the garment speaks for itself.
Timeless Silhouettes: Classic cuts and shapes that transcend fleeting trends are favored.
Understated Accessories: Simple, elegant jewelry, high-quality leather bags, and classic footwear complete the look.

Why the Rise of Quiet Luxury?

Several factors contribute to the growing popularity of this aesthetic. A shift away from conspicuous consumption, a desire for more lasting fashion choices, and a renewed thankfulness for craftsmanship all play a role. In a world saturated with fast fashion and social media hype, quiet luxury offers a refreshing choice – a focus on enduring style and personal expression.

Quiet luxury isn’t about not enjoying beautiful things; it’s about enjoying them in a more discerning and thoughtful way. It’s an investment in quality, longevity, and a timeless sense of style that will remain relevant for years to come.

What Is Not Beautiful?

I personally like things that are considered ugly. In terms of fashion, we enjoy the style that is a bit unique and common – a hole here, a strange design there… it makes me ask the question, ‘What is beautiful and ugly?’ The things that are considered perfect are actually incomplete, and on the contrary, there are perfect things in things that are not perfect.

It’s my movie, titled Ugly Sister. But is Elbi really an ‘ugly’ child? I don’t think so. Elbi is beautiful. I think the word ‘ugly’ was created by society.

Leare Ren: 'Ugly Sister' Interview - Marie Claire Korea

In this interview, I also filmed the video. I asked for no corrections to be made.

I hope this interview resonates with people. I wanted to express my authentic voice and for it to exist as it is indeed. I have no intention of criticizing individual choices regarding makeup or plastic surgery; everyone is free to do as they please. Though, I want to address the broader societal structure. ‘We’ need to change. I beleive we should empower people to recognize, “We are good enough as we are.”

is there anything you’d like to say to the Korean audience?

I hope you enjoyed this. And I encourage you to share it with those around you – friends, family, daughters, sons, even grandmothers! If you feel heroic, please do. Thank you. Sending love and light.
