MESSENGER: Mapping Mercury and a Final View of Earth
The MESSENGER spacecraft, a seventh Discovery-class mission, holds the distinction of being the first to orbit Mercury. Launched in 2004 and concluding its mission in 2015, MESSENGER provided unprecedented insights into the geology, magnetic field, and chemical composition of our solar system’s innermost planet. Beyond its primary objective, the spacecraft likewise offered a unique perspective on its origin point – Earth.
A Detailed Mapping of Mercury
MESSENGER’s primary goal was to comprehensively study Mercury. Over four years in orbit, the spacecraft successfully mapped the planet’s surface, revealing its geological history and identifying key components of its internal magnetic field. A significant discovery was the confirmation that Mercury’s polar deposits are largely composed of water ice [NASA]. Earth as Seen from MESSENGER
During its journey, MESSENGER performed a flyby of Earth in 2005, capturing images of our planet from a remarkable distance. The spacecraft passed Earth at an altitude of 2,348 kilometers, traveling at nearly 11 kilometers per second [The Planetary Society]. A One-Way Journey
MESSENGER’s mission wasn’t designed for a return trip. As highlighted in an Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) on March 22, 2026, MESSENGER is “one of the few things created on the Earth that will never return.” [APOD]. At the end of its operational life, on April 30, 2015, the spacecraft was intentionally crashed into Mercury’s surface [NASA], bringing its groundbreaking mission to a close.
