LeBron and Bronny James Make History: Father-Son Duo Hits the NBA Court
In a moment that will be etched in NBA history, LeBron James and his son Bronny took the court together Tuesday night, becoming the first father-son duo to play in the league.
The Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves saw the father and son duo checking in together with four minutes left in the second quarter, prompting a thunderous ovation from the home crowd. The 39-year-old LeBron was already in the game and played 13 minutes before combining with his 20-year-old son for about two and a half minutes of action.
Father-Son Pep Talk Fuels Historic Moment
Before their memorable debut, LeBron gave Bronny a pep talk on the bench (captured by TNT cameras and microphones). “Y’all ready? You see the intensity, right? Just play carefree, though,” LeBron could be heard saying. “Don’t worry about mistakes. Just go out and play hard.”
Their time on the court together was, as LeBron promised, fast and furious. LeBron, who finished the night with 16 points, missed two perimeter shots before making a dunk. Bronny, after snagging an early offensive rebound and missing a tip-in, attempted his first NBA jump shot — a 3-pointer that narrowly missed the mark. He checked out shortly after, getting another wave of cheers from the crowd.
Joining a Rare Club
The Jameses join a select group of father-son professional athletes who have played together. The other notable pairings include:
- Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. (MLB):
- Tim Raines and Tim Raines Jr. (MLB):
- Gordie Howe and his sons Mark and Marty (NHL):
However, with LeBron still playing at an elite level, the James duo’s moment in the spotlight becomes even more significant.
A Dream Realized after Bronny’s Challenges
The emotional power of the moment was amplified by Bronny’s remarkable journey back to the court after suffering cardiac arrest and undergoing open-heart surgery in the summer of 2023. He went on to play a shortened season at the University of Southern California before declaring for the NBA draft. The Lakers eagerly selected him as the 55th overall pick.
