People Power Party Leader Resigns, Calls for Return of Nomination Chief

Jang Dong-hyuk, leader of South Korea’s People Power Party (PPP), announced his resignation on March 14, 2026, citing difficulties in achieving “innovative nominations” for upcoming elections. He simultaneously appealed for the return of Lee Jeong-hyeon, Chairman of the Nomination Management Committee, who had previously resigned from his position.

Appeal for Lee Jeong-hyeon’s Return

In a Facebook post, Representative Jang urged Lee to reconsider his resignation, stating, “The role of the chairman is essential for victory in this local election.” He expressed his earnest hope for Lee’s return, adding, “I will be waiting for your painstaking decision.” Jang recalled a previous conversation where he requested Lee to lead the nomination process, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming local elections. He implored Lee to “protect the Republic of Korea and the People Power Party, which are in crisis, together,” awaiting his “thoughtful decision.”

Lee Jeong-hyeon’s Resignation and Concerns

Lee Jeong-hyeon had announced his resignation the day prior, taking “full responsibility” for the challenges in the nomination process. He explained that, despite efforts to consider various opinions, he found it difficult to pursue his envisioned direction. His resignation is reportedly linked to the rejection of Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon’s nomination application on two occasions, as well as disagreements with the party leadership regarding nominations in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk and Busan regions.

Calls for “Electric Shock” Innovation

Prior to Jang’s Facebook message, Lee reiterated his intention to resign, believing the PPP requires “innovation at the level of an electric shock.” He described the party as being in a “state of coma” and advocated for drastic measures to revitalize it. Lee stated he had developed a “prescription” for innovative nominations based on data and public opinion, but expressed disappointment that it was not implemented. He questioned, “The only way to save the person in a coma is with an electric shock. If they don’t let me utilize the electric shock, then I have to leave. Is there any other way?”

Party Response and Future Outlook

The People Power Party was founded in February 2020 as the United Future Party and later transitioned to its current form in August 2020. It is currently the second-largest party in the South Korean National Assembly, representing a conservative political stance [Wikipedia]. Attention is now focused on Lee Jeong-hyeon’s response to Jang Dong-hyuk’s appeal, with speculation that he may return if his demands for innovative nominations are met.
