Lees-McRae Flag Football Dominates Chowan in Conference Carolinas Opener

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College flag football team began its Conference Carolinas campaign with a resounding 87-6 victory over Chowan University on Thursday evening at Garrison Stadium. Makenzie Hicks led the Bobcats’ offensive charge, accounting for 308 passing yards and five touchdowns.

Game Highlights

Lees-McRae swiftly established control, opening the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Ava Rivera to Natalia Hernández de León at the 9:02 mark of the first quarter. Hicks connected with Tami Chatwood for a 19-yard score with 1:55 remaining in the first, extending the lead. Mackenzie Walker then intercepted a Chowan pass and returned it 38 yards for another touchdown, pushing the score to 29-0.

Rivera found Hernández de León for another passing touchdown, further solidifying the Bobcats’ advantage at 35-0 before halftime. Lees-McRae continued its dominance in the second half, adding 52 points to secure the 87-6 win.

Key Player Statistics

Makenzie Hicks completed 23 of 36 pass attempts for 308 yards and five touchdowns. Ava Rivera went 7-for-10 for 90 yards and three touchdowns. Kennedy Vannoy led the rushing attack with 101 total yards and one touchdown. Natalia Hernández de León was a primary receiving target, hauling in five receptions for 106 yards and four touchdowns, while Ashley Alvarado recorded five receptions for 72 yards.

Defensive Standouts

Kennedy Vannoy anchored the Bobcats’ defense with 10 tackles and two interceptions. Mackenzie Walker contributed 10 total tackles and three interceptions.

Looking Ahead

Lees-McRae flag football will travel to Franklin Springs, Georgia, to face Emmanuel College on Saturday, February 28, at 12 p.m.
