Sir Elton John Calls Legalization of Marijuana “One of the Greatest Mistakes of All Time”

Sir Elton John criticized the legalization of marijuana in North America during an interview with
Time magazine, calling it “one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”

The music legend, who recently ended his farewell tour after 330 dates and
has been sober for 34 years,
has also helped fellow celebrities struggling with addiction, including Eminem and Robbie Williams.

John’s Views on Addiction

John told Time magazine that admitting his own past struggles with addiction was crucial for
his recovery. He believes marijuana can be addictive and lead to other drug use.

“It leads to other drugs. And when you’re stoned — and I’ve been stoned — you don’t think
normally,”
he stated.

John’s comments come after he was named Time magazine’s icon of the year.

He disclosed in a 1999 interview with Sir David Frost that his medical troubles during an
Australian tour in the mid-1980s were due to marijuana use, and he
chose to quit after advice from doctors.

John also shared details about his short fuse, admitting it can get him
into trouble.

John’s Difficult Temperament

“I Don’t like having that temperament, but it’s all usually done and dusted within five or
ten minutes,” John said.
“David (Furnish) can tell you my fuse is very short, and the worst thing about my temper is that David
is very rational about things and he’ll explain… and I’ll get even madder about it.”

He also revealed that his temper helped his songwriting process.

“But it’s really effortless. If I get a lyric and I look at it, the song comes straight out,” he added.
