LG Chem Advances Kidney Cancer Treatment with Novel PERK Inhibitor, HC-5404
LG Chem is bolstering it’s oncology pipeline with the acquisition of global exclusive development and option rights for HC-5404, a first-in-class investigational drug targeting kidney cancer. This strategic move, announced on January 5th,involves a partnership with U.S.-based biotech firm HiberCell and aims to create a synergistic treatment approach when combined with LG Chem’s existing angiogenesis inhibitor, Fortiveda (tivozanib).
Expanding Treatment Options for Kidney Cancer
Through its U.S. anticancer subsidiary, AVEO, LG Chem has secured the possibility to advance HC-5404 through clinical development. the agreement grants LG Chem the right to initiate and oversee an upcoming Phase 1b clinical trial. Accomplished results will pave the way for an option contract, granting the company exclusive global licensing rights to the drug candidate upon completion of phase 2 trials.Financial terms include an upfront payment to hibercell, with further development, commercialization milestone payments, and sales royalties contingent on exercising the option.
HC-5404: A Novel Approach to Cancer Therapy
HC-5404 represents a novel therapeutic strategy in cancer treatment as the world’s first PERK (protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase) inhibitor to reach clinical trials. PERK is a crucial protein involved in cellular stress response, enabling cancer cells to survive in challenging conditions like oxygen and nutrient deprivation. By inhibiting PERK, HC-5404 disrupts this survival mechanism, rendering cancer cells more vulnerable to existing therapies.
LG Chem’s strategy centers on leveraging HC-5404 as an auxiliary agent, particularly in combination with Fortiveda. Fortiveda is an established angiogenesis inhibitor, working by blocking the formation of new blood vessels that feed tumors. The combined approach – inhibiting both the cancer’s survival mechanisms and its nutrient supply – is expected to substantially enhance treatment efficacy and broaden treatment options for kidney cancer patients.
Commitment to Innovation in Oncology
“We will continue to provide more effective treatments to extend the survival period and improve the quality of life of cancer patients around the world,” stated Son Ji-woong, head of LG Chem’s life science business division. “We will focus our capabilities on developing future anticancer drugs that will lead to the growth of LG Chem’s bio business.”
This collaboration underscores LG Chem’s commitment to innovation in the oncology space and its dedication to developing next-generation therapies that address unmet medical needs. The development of HC-5404, in conjunction with fortiveda, holds the potential to significantly impact the treatment landscape for kidney cancer and improve outcomes for patients globally.
